Human rights and mental health Many of the Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are particularly relevant to mental health. People must, by law, be protected from ‘inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment’. ‘Everyone … apart from ‘persons of unsound mind’ … has the right to liberty and security of person’ … ‘Everyone has the right to respect for his or her private and family life’ … Everyone has the right “not to be subject to discrimination in enjoyment of other Convention rights”
