  2. VIRTUAL CLASSROOM What is Virtual Classroom? Virtual Classroom is part of the Arctic Virtual Learning Tools project led by Thule Institute, University of Oulu. The project is funded by the NCM Arctic Co-operation program and it joins together the University of Arctic, Arctic Portal, APECS, International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry, University Centre of the Westfjords and Stefansson Arctic Institute, Akureyri. The goal of the Arctic Virtual Learning Tools project is to improve access to education in the Arctic through new or improved online learning tools. These will support the existing programs and curriculum of the UArctic.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM Schedule 2009 -assessment of the functions needed for the on-line learning environment -testing of some of the on-line learning environments and conference tools -on-line survey for users (user requarements and needs) 2010 -survey analysis > choosing the learning environment -planning and technical work for the prototype -pilot delivery of the Thematic Network on Global Change course ”Adaptation to the globalization in the Arctic” 2011 -launch of the Virtual Classroom at the University of Arctic’s 10years anniversary council meeting

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM SURVEY Summary on the results: • 98% of those who had had previous experience with distance learning were positive in using it again • 73% of participants had stable high-speed internet connection indicating that modern solutions can be offered in studies in Arctic regions • Over half of the participants said that both live and recorded sessions are important • 66% of survey participants stated they would like to have live teaching even if it requares participation at certain times. • Lack of the flexibility was main reason for not wanting a live on-line teaching • The face-to-face and/or real-time conversations with fellow students and teachers is something that students would like to have. So far in Arctic studies it has not been possible due to long geographical distances.
