Phylum Porifera Sponges The First Animals
Sponges are animals and belong to the Animal Kingdom. Characteristics: • 1. Multicellular • 2. No organs or body systems • 3 . Cellular digestion – no mouth, no stomach, no anus (heterotrophic) • 4. Asymmetry
Sponges are SESSILE – they do not move They obtain food by FILTER FEEDING
They reproduce sexually (with sperm and eggs) in the water (external fertilization) They can also reproduce asexually (regeneration)
Collar Cells – flagellated cells in the sponge that move water, food, and nutrients and take away waste.
Sponges have no nervous system – they cannot respond to environment and cannot feel. • Shape of Life Video - Origins (Sponges) http://shapeoflife.org/video/phyla/sponges-origins or http://vimeo.com/37032195

Cnidarians - jellyfish, coral, hydra, sea anemone *Named for the stinging cells or cnidoblasts that cover their tentacles, which contain stinging threads called nematocysts.
Radial Symmetry • Mouth • Nerve Net • Gastrovascular cavity • Tentacles with Cnidoblasts (stinging cells) Characteristics of Cnidarians:
Cnidarians have two body forms:polyp (vase shaped) medusa (cup shaped)
Portuguese Man of War is not a Jellyfish it is a cnidarian that floats in the water and has long tentacles Portuguese Man of War Video http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/07/04/portuguese-man-of-wars-sting-12-at-horseneck-beach-in-westport/
The Hydra is a freshwater cnidarian. What kind of symmetry does hydra have? Is it a medusa or a polyp?
