  2. Wimberley Market Days Introduction • Owned & operated by the Wimberley Lions Club • 1st weekend of every month: March – December • 2nd largest trade market in Texas • Generates capital for charitable donations

Wimberley Market Days Location & Scope • FM 2325 in Wimberley, TX (Approx. 1 mile NW RR 12) • Lions Field property is approximately 12.3 acres • There are 475 vendor booths & 7 concessions • 3 gates allow access to the property • Other buildings include the pavilions, information booth, main office, EMS and Sheriff locations

Data Collection CAD file – provided by the Lion’s club Updated booth inventory attribute list Current photos of every booth within the market USGS orthophoto image (Feb 2006) with a 2 foot resolution NAIP (National Agricultural Imagery Program) digital orthophoto image (July 2004) with a 1 meter resolution Hays county parcel boundaries

Addressing System Overview • Literature Review • Consulted with Lions Club leaders after progress report to discuss various potential addressing systems • Finalized Drafts of Addressing Systems • 3 options • “Islands” Sections • Large Sections • Street-centric Sections • No alterations to current street names • Gaps in the numbering system allow for future booth partitioning

Addressing System ISLANDS SECTIONS • Natural boundaries • Easily identifiable sections – 21 total • Islands coded alphabetically • East to West spatial layout • P = Parking • Numbering system independent per island • Majority of “islands” contain 10 – 40 booths per island • Attribute Table includes street location of each booth

Addressing System LARGE SECTIONS • Arbitrary divisions between sections • Gate entrances • Based on current Lions Field sections with 1 alteration • 4 total sections with client-appropriate theme: L-I-O-N • East to West spatial layout • Numbering system independent per section • All sections include >100 booths • Difficult to create logical spatial arrangement • Attribute Table includes street location of each booth

Addressing System STREET-CENTRIC SECTIONS • Arbitrary divisions between sections • 19 street sections • Identified beginning & end of each street • Streets begin nearest to gate entrance or main street “Lion Way” • Irregular booths: corner- and non-corner booths that face 2 streets • Identified with the most appropriate street • Causes confusing fragmentation of “sections” • Independent numbering system • Odd values on the right side of street • Even values on the left side of street

Map Design • Base map was created in GIS format using ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 • The main features of Lion Field were georeferenced and digitized • Each booth will be linked to our interactive map • Display booth elements • Display photograph • Each map was cartographically enhanced using Adobe Illustrator CS3

  16. Website Development • Completed GeoGurus website, which includes: • All reports & presentations • Interactive Mapping System • Database of Booth Attributes • Changed from SWiSH Max to Adobe Dreamweaver • Linked to ShopMarketDays.com • http://geosites.evans.txstate.edu/~g4427s08-02

Database • Completed extensive research on database management and implementation • Used HTML coding and JavaScript applications • Easy to query for desired booth attributes • Embedded a sample of our database on the GeoGurus website • Had initial meeting with the Webmaster for www.ShopMartketDays.com but were not able to further communicate and/or coordinate with her

Interactive Mapping System • Researched the ALOV Map • Embedded an ALOV map viewer on the GeoGurus website • Java ‘server-side’ application • XML links geographic data to a web browser • Allows non-GIS savvy users to view GIS data files and query the features’ attributes • Potential day-vendors can now pan, zoom, and explore the booths on Lions Field before Market Day • ALOV map viewer currently uses the original Lions Field numbering system

Conclusion Addressing • Option A, Islands Sections, is a compromise of: • Way finding, • Booth inventory management, • Flexibility for future expansion of the market. • Pros: • Distinct natural boundaries within random layout • Hierarchical independence of each island • Modifications to booth arrangement affect few addresses • Cons: • Many islands/sections • Confusing to visitor

Conclusion Addressing • Option B, Large Sections, is a slight modification of the current system. • Pros: • Creative thematic sectioning (L-I-O-N) • Visually pleasing map design • Cons: • Difficult to number in logical arrangement • Beginning and ending numbering break spatial continuity of booths • Difficult to renumber booths in future

Conclusion Addressing • Option C, Street-Centric, based on a classic street numbering system. • Pros: • Familiarity of system • Most street sections have reasonable number of booths • Cons: • Irregular corners • Booths facing two or more streets • Fragmented irregular sections • Difficult to restructure in future

Conclusion Day Rental Procedures • Created an extensive database that allows day-vendors to query for booths with desired attributes. • Helps day renters identify most preferred booths • Identified affordable software to create an interactive mapping system that aids in day-vendor processing. • Helps day renters locate preferred booths before arrival • Gives day renters visual of booth

  23. Conclusion Future • Lions Club can now discuss, critique or modify the addressing system options to best suit their management, vendor and visitor needs. • Establishing an addressing system will ease a future survey of booth boundaries. • Two systems can be easily implemented on the ShopMarketDays.com web-site to assist potential day renters.
