  1. RAILWAY DAYS – BUCAREST Interoperable Railways from vision to reality: the Italian experience

  2. Summary • A Vision made Reality: the new Italian High Speed Railways in commercial operation • Key to Interoperabilty: the European Traffic Management System ERTMS • The basis: European Directives and Technical Specifications • Proving that it works: the integration and verification of Interoperability

  3. A Vision in Context • All main TEN (Trans European Network) Corridors run through Italy • New Interoperable Infrastructure to be built • Existing infrasctructure to be made interoperable • The Signalling problem

  4. A Vision in Context

  5. European Signalling: a non-interoperable Legacy

  6. The Interoperable solution: ERTMS Signalling

  7. ERTMS is the Solution for Signalling

  8. ERTMS: Why is it good? • ERTMS allows the uninterrupted travel of passengers and goods through national boundaries • ERTMS is standard for Europe so it opens the European market for railway products • ERTMS increases the capacity of existing railways • ERTMS improves the Safety of existing railways

  9. ERTMS: Where shall it be used? • Fitting of new high speed lines and trains • Retrofitting of conventional trains for interoperable service • Retrofitting of conventional lines as overlay on the existing signalling system

  10. Equipment for ERTMS: the Ansaldo Numbers

  11. ERTMS Systems: the Ansaldo References • Torino-Novara-Milano Line – extension 120 km – IN OPERATION since February 2006 • 2 RBC - 10 Interlockings (Torino-Novara) – 4 Interlockings (Novara-Milano) • 900 Eurobalises (fixed and switchable) • about 40 LEU (HSL entrance handling / Hot Box Detection) • about 180 Audio frequency track circuits • Roma-Napoli Line – extension 200 km - IN OPERATION since December 2005 • 3 RBC - 18 Interlockings • about 1500 Eurobalises (fixed and switchable) • about 60 LEU (HSL entrance handling / Hot Box Detection) • Milano-Bologna Line – extension 185 km – IN PROGRESS • 3 RBC - 17 Interlockings • about 1500 Eurobalises (fixed and switchable) • about 60 LEU (HSL entrance handling / Hot Box Detection)

  12. ERTMS Systems: other Ansaldo Applications • Poříčany–Kolín Line (Czech Republic) – L2 pilot section, extension 22 km • 1 RBC - 3 already existing IXL (supplied by AŽD) • The RBC/IXL protocol developed for the IHSL has been reused; it has been implemented by AŽD following the IHSL Specifications • 300 Eurobalises (fixed) • Schaerbeek Site (Belgium) – test site • ERTMS L1 superimposed on National System TBL1+

  13. The Basis: European Directives • Directive 96/48/EC – Interoperability of TransEuropean High Speed Rail System • Directive 2001/16/EC – Interoperability of TransEuropean Conventional Rail System • Unified by 2004/50/EC: identical requirements both Conventional and High Speed

  14. The Basis: Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs) • TSI CCS for High Speed Rail Systems • TSI CCS for Conventional Rail Systems • ERTMS characteristics set in Annex A to the TSIs • Annex A reference all mandatory specifications and their valid versions • Annex A may be updated without updating TSI text

  15. Which Version of ERTMS? • ERTMS system version (trackside and onboard) is defined by its Baseline • ERTMS Baseline is the set of versions of the mandatory documents referred by the TSI in its Annex A

  16. Example: ERMTS Baseline Version 2.2.2 • System Requirement Specifications v.2.2.2 • Engineering Rules v2.2.2 • Eurobalise Specifications v2.0.0 • …

  17. ERTMS System Version in Italy • Our project development started on the basis of ERTMS Baseline Version 2.2.2 to which we applied some changes chosen among those already agreed at European level in the framework of the ongoing consolidation process • The changes applied fulfilled the needs of our contractor (RFI Italian Railway Network) • As the the European ERTMS Version consolidation process is now concluded we will apply also the remaining agreed changes so to complete the migration to the new armonised ERTMS Baseline Version 2.3.0 • This migration is being coordinated with the Italian Railways so to assure the smoothest transition with an uninterrupted commercial operation service

  18. Making sure it works: Ansaldo ERTMS Integration Process for Torino-Novara HSL

  19. Making sure it works: Ansaldo ERTMS Integration Process • Increased approach, from laboratory environment to real plant, using the real interfaces • Equipment • Interlockings • Radio Block Centers • Interlocking Simulator (software running on commercial hardware) • Balise Groups (2 balises) • Onboard Unit (EVC European Vital Computer) • Simulation tools • Track Circuit and Station Simulator • Running Train Simulator / Line Status Simulator
