  4. Promontory • N. high area of land that juts out into a body of water • Although it is extremely dangerous, the fearless man jumped from the edge of the promontory.

  5. Maelstrom • N. large, violent whirlpool • Charybdis, a deadly maelstrom, forces Odysseus to hug the shoreline where Scylla roams.

  6. Insidious • Adj. treacherous; more dangerous than is apparent • The suitors devise an insidious plan to ambush Telemachus.
