  2. The Oregon Public Defenders Association was founded in 1979 and was quickly restructured and renamed the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.

  3. A small group of dedicated leaders helped build the organization in those early years.

  4. As the years passed, OCDLA developed into the gold standard for criminal defense associations. Today, the association has over 1,300 members and is the largest per capita association of its kind.

  5. But for nearly 34 years, the association rented various offices around Eugene, never having a permanent home in which to grow and serve its’ members.

  6. Seven years ago, the first serious discussions of locating and purchasing a home for OCDLA began during Greg Hazarabedian’s presidency.

  7. In 2010, Chris and Suzanna Hansen re-energized the building effort with a $10,000 donation towards a feasibility study.

  8. Campaign Committee David McDonald, Chairman, Portland Michelle Burrows, Portland Marie Desmond, Eugene Hugh Duvall, Eugene Chris Hansen, Eugene Jim Hennings, Portland John Henry Hingson, III, Oregon City Susan Elizabeth Reese, Newport Staff John Potter, Executive Director Riley Jones, Development Coordinator In July of 2011, a building committee was formed and fundraising efforts kick-started that fall.

  9. In December of 2011, the perfect potential “home” was discovered…

  10. In July of 2012, Roscoe and Debra Nelson offered support to the tune of $50,000! The Portland couple provided the campaign a huge boost of energy with their leadership donation.

  11. After 15 months of negotiations, paperwork, and permits OCDLA officially acquired the building at 101 E. 14th Avenue on April 8, 2013.

  12. On May 20, 2013, Essex Construction began six weeks of remodeling work.

  13. OCDLA’s new home officially opened for business on July 1, 2013.
