Acquisition of Survey Data Project Manager: Howard Ehmke Project Description: • Topographic surveys were performed inside the STAs to more clearly delineate ground surface elevations between interior levees and control structures • Vertical control surveys were conducted at flow measurement stations to confirm, and correct where necessary, gage datum elevations
Acquisition of Survey Data Project status Work completed to date (FY04 and FY05): • Vertical Control Surveys • All planned vertical control survey work complete • Topographic Surveys • All planned STA surveys complete
Additional Flow & Water Quality Monitoring Stations Project Manager: Matahel Ansar Project Description: • Establishment of 47 new flow and water quality monitoring stations for the STAs • These additional monitoring stations are mostly in STA-3/4 in FY04 (11 structures), in STA-1E in FY05 (19 structures), and in STA-2 & STA-1W in FY06 (4 structures)

Update and Maintenance of Hydraulic Models Project Manager: Tracey Piccone Project Description: • Evaluate and predict changes in flow distribution as the STAs mature and change with time • Develop calibrated two-dimensional hydraulic simulation model of each STA • Regularly update and calibrate the models as new information is received (topo, structural, vegetation)
Update and Maintenance of Hydraulic Models Work completed to date • Work Order completed with Sutron Corporation • Used FESWMS/SMS • New models of STA-2, STA-6, STA-1E, STA-1W, STA-5 and STA-3/4 • Three flow conditions: Low Flow, Design Flow, and Peak Flow • Developed, calibrated, and verified models for STA-1W, STA-2, STA-3/4, STA-6 Section 1 • Future efforts will improve upon STA models for which calibration data was not available (STA-5, STA-1E)

Continued Development DMSTA Project status • Work completed to date: • FY05 and FY06 work funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Department of the Interior (Dr. Bill Walker) • Tasks completed to date: • Built reservoir module • Updated STA calibration • Enhanced Phosphorus Cycling component • Updated model platform • DMSTA v.2 was released April 2005 • Used for EAARFS evaluations in mid-2005
Water Quality Impacts of Reservoirs Project Manager: Yanling Zhao Project Description: • Assist the EAA Storage Reservoirs Phase 1 PDT in the acquisition and analysis of calibration data sets for water quality impacts associated with reservoirs. These calibration data sets will be obtained from similar water bodies in central and southern Florida i.e., Lake Apopka, Lake Jessup, the Brevard County Stick Marsh and the Sun Ag reservoir, as well as Lake Istokpoga and other large-scale water supply reservoirs in South Florida. • Develop data files and summary report(s) of data sets collected and analyzed for use in calibrating reservoir components of water quality model(s)
Water Quality Impacts of Reservoirs Project Status: • All lake and reservoir data was provided to Dr. Bill Walker for use in calibrating reservoir module of DMSTA2 • All data is accessible through District’s web site: • http://spatial1.sfwmd.gov/wqir/ • All Project Deliverables are posted at: • http://www.sfwmd.gov/org/erd/longtermplan/documents.shtml • All work complete • 1.5 years early • $1.2 million under recommended budget
Evaluation of Full-Scale STA Enhancements Project Manager: Tracey Piccone Project Description: • Complete demonstration projects including construction of a limerock berm in Cell 5B of STA-1W and implementation of vegetation management measures designed to improve STA performance • Project is being funded by a cost-share agreement between the District and the DEP • District received grant funding in the revised amount of $1.1 million from DEP/EPA (original proposal $1.3 million) • Project includes management of DEP Grant Agreement G0040 • Results of the demonstration projects can be applied to other STAs to improve their performance
Evaluation of Full-Scale STA Enhancements Project Status – Limerock Berm • Limerock berm was completed in STA-1W Cell 5 in August 2003 • With-berm Cell 5 outflow phosphorus concentrations will be compared to pre-berm values • Dye Tracer Project was completed in early FY05 • 2004 Hurricane Damage Repairs completed in early FY05 • Top elevation of berm was lowered in 2005 for consistency with revised Cell 5 target stage • Summary report underway
Evaluation of Full-Scale STA Enhancements Project status - STA-3/4 Vegetation Management Demonstration Project • 50 sites inoculated with SAV in August 2004 • Inoculated species root in October-November 2004 • Natural colonization at locations without vegetation • Initial SAV grow-in assessed March 2005 • Second assessment March 2006

Update Baseline Data Sets Project Manager: Tracey Piccone Project Description: • Update the analyses presented in the Baseline Data report to continually improve the degree of confidence in the projected total phosphorus loads in inflows to the stormwater treatment areas (or, in some instances, discharged directly to the EPA)

Basins with Limited Current Data Project Manager: Kathy Pietro Project Description: • To enhance the water quality and quantity data for basins with limited current data, e.g., C-51 West and C-11 West Basins
Basins with Limited Current Data Project status • Work completed to date: • C-51 West Basin • Final Report posted at: • http://www.sfwmd.gov/org/erd/longtermplan/documents.shtml • A regression equation was developed for estimating daily phosphorus concentrations, and this was applied to the 31-year simulated runoff used in the Long-Term Plan, a document developed for achieving compliance with the phosphorus criterion
Basins with Limited Current Data Project status • The resulting phosphorus levels were 38% lower (115 ppb compared to 185 ppb) than the estimates used in developing the STA performance projections associated with the Long-Term Plan • Updated projections were used in EAA Regional Feasibility Study

Lake Okeechobee Long-Term Trends Project Manager: Kathy Pietro Project Description: • To better understand the temporal and spatial relationship between Lake Okeechobee nutrient status and operation (e.g., choice of outflow point) on phosphorus loads discharged to the STAs • In conjunction with Lake Okeechobee PDT, update the TMDL modeling and trend analyses • Conduct a temporal and spatial trend analyses for TP at outflow points that deliver water to the STAs and reservoirs

ECP Operational Monitoring Project Manager: Linda Crean Project Description: Operational monitoring of the STAs • Weekly/biweekly water quality collection and sample analysis for TP, SRP, TDPO4, OPO4, TSS, Ca, Cl, ALK, TKN, NH4, and NOx • Maintenance (plus purchase and installation as required) of sampling and flow monitoring equipment • Calibration of autosamplers and weir structures • Quality control for the collection, analysis, and archiving of the data collected • Calibration, installation, monitoring, data collection, maintenance, QA, and archiving of flow data for all the flow structures indirectly associated with permit compliance but necessary for flood control and STA Optimization
ECP Operational Monitoring Project Status • Collection of flow measurements and weekly/ biweekly water quality samples (grabs and autosamplers) from interior non-permit sites in STA-1W, STA-2, STA-3/4, STA-5, and STA-6 on-going • Collection of bi-weekly grabs at internal STA-1E stations by March 2006 • Activation of autosamplers in STA-1E should be completed in FY06
Analysis and Interpretation Project Manager: Jana Newman Project Description: • Ecological assessment of data obtained from the permit compliance and operational monitoring • Annual vegetation maps and synoptic water collection along with tri-annual collection and analysis of sediment from all internal cells of the STAs • Staff will provide annual phosphorus inflow/outflow budgets for the internal cells, short-term and long-term analyses in support of operational assessment • Establish sampling design for all STA internal cells
