History • The bow and arrow was used for hunting animals and for war, before the gun was even created. • Archers were the least paid solders in battle because making and learning to use bow and arrow were easier than many other battle weapons they used. • After that crossbows became popular because they were easier to learn how to fight with. • Guns got better than arrows so Archers decided to make it fun so they made it an Olympic sport.
History of the Sport • Hubert Van Innis turned Archery from a battle weapon to archery as a sport. He was very passionate about archery as a sport. He was so eager that he competed in the first archery game and won. Then he made his victory in 1900 famous and that’s when archery became an Olympic sport. In 1972 he competed again and came in 2nd. He competed on the Belgium team Winning Six Gold and three Silver Medals.
How the Sport is Played • To play archery you must find an empty area so you won’t hurt anybody. Hold the bow handle in your non writing hand. Then put the arrow on the guide on the bow with the feather side away from the bow. Place 2 fingers around the arrows back, that’s around the bow string then pull back hard and release to shoot your first bow.
USA Team Member that got Medals • Bradly Ellison came in second in the year 2012 and is the best player of the USA Archery team. • Jacob Wukiewas on the same team that came in 2nd in 2012 with Bradly Ellison. Out of the 3 guys that are on the team he is the 2nd best. • Jake Kaminski is the worst on the USA team but still scored enough to stay on the team. He got lucky and got a bulls eye the last arrow he shot so their team just got in 2nd and beat the team South Korea.
Archery World Records • Im Dong Hyun – Im got 699 points in a 72 arrow round which is the highest rank in a 72 round He was from South Korea. • Jin Hyek Oh Won with the highest point score in 2012 and beat the old record and holds the new archery world record. He was also from South Korea.
Record Holders • Im Dong Hyun has the record off 699 points in a 72 arrow game he is from south Korea. • Park Kyun Mo has the record of 173 points in a 18 arrow round and he is also from south Korea • Justin Huish has the record for a 54 arrow round and he scored 502. He is from the United States. • Tim cuddihy has the record for a 36 arrow round and he scored 340 points. He is from Australia.
Archery Equipment • Arm Guard: The arm guard protects your arm from being hit by the bowstring. • Bow and Arrow: The arrow has to have the competitors name or initials on it, the size of the arrow should be in between 9.3 millimeters and 5.5 millimeters, the smaller the faster. The bow is 48 pounds for men and 38 pounds for women • Bow string: the bow string is usually made of polyethylene fibres which make them stronger than steel. • Quiver: The quiver is the case for the arrows.
More Archery Equipment • Chest guard: The chest guard is plastic or leather to protect your body from a bowstring when released hitting you. • Shooting glove: The shooting glove is a leather guard that protects your fingers when shooting. • Target: The target is 48” wide but to the archer {who’s 86 yards away}it looks like a thumbtack the center ring of the target is about 12 centimeters wide. There is also a X10 Ring that gives you at least an automatic tie breaker or a world record.
