  1. Steller Sea Lion By: Heidi V.B. Mack Biels

  2. What our topic is: • Animalia kingdom • Chordata phylum • Mammalia class • Carnivora order • Otariidae family

  3. Found in: • Northern Californian coast, north to Alaska, across Bering straits to coasts of Japan and Russia. • Breeding groups in Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands

  4. Importance: • Top-level carnivores that consume a wide variety of fish and cephalopods. • Hunted for their meat, fur, and oils.--played a part in their population. Destruction also happened due to nets, pollutants, and ship strikes. • Positive effects for us- body parts for valuable material, food. • Negative effects for us- crop pests • Though to deplete fish stocks and eat fish out of hatcheries. • Skin is used for boat covers • Whiskers are used for Chinese opium pipes.

  5. External: • Increased incidence of parasites and disease • predation by Killer Whales • nutritional stress through competition with or other species for food. • nutritional stress caused by natural and or human-induced changes in the abundance, quality, and destruction of prey. • meteorological changes • pollutions and toxic substances

  6. External cont. • entanglement in marine debris • incidental and intentional take by man • boat and ship strikes • illegal hunting and shooting • offshore oil and gas exploration • http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/sealion_stellar_kodiak

  7. Systems working together: • Oil contamination to their environment needs to drop. That’s killing not only the pups but adults too. • Killer whales need to stop consuming so many (18% of their population) every year • Climate change has to slow or stop because it is causing nutritional deficiencies • Cures to the new diseases and parasites need to be found and acted on. The disease causes need to found as well. • Pregnancy rates need to increase, as does pup survival.

  8. What can be done to optimize: • Steller sea lions are well-protected under federal law • No one can hunt or bother them • Certain spots have been declared no fishing zones so the sea lions can eat • There’s a lot of research going on about the best ways to decrease their death rate.

  9. Projections: • Increase in number and population • Go extinct • Adapt to new habitat
