  5. RFKC & Me For me - Love at first sight! Wayne liked– • What I’d said about RFKC: “I believe that a week at RFKC can be more effective than a year in therapy/counseling.” *and, that I’d written a book on child abuse for those who work with children (teachers, youth pastors, camp staff, daycare centers) – what they need to know Becca C. RFKC Involvements • Child Abuse trainer (early 1990s) Now, over 15 years later… • 6 different camps in 2 states and 2 countries (helped start 3 camps) • Camp Psychologist – 13 • Training Coordinator – 6 • Camp Director – 4 • Asst. Photographer – 4 • Asst Director – 3 • Camp photographer – 1 • Child Placement Coordinator – 1 (the FIRST year!) Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

  10. RFKC - Why are you here? • Serve God • Show compassion (mercy, grace, love) • Make a difference • Help the hurting heal (wounded healer) • Self healing • Recognition • Obligation • Fun Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

What is our motivation for being involved with RFKC? • Often: we are involved for one or more reasons • Reasons fall into two categories • God & Others-focused: What can I GIVE to it - an attitude of giving, caring, helping, serving(1st four reasons) • Serve God • Show compassion (mercy, grace, love) • Make a difference • Help the hurting heal (wounded healer) • Self-focused: What can I GET out of it - (last four reasons) • Self healing • Recognition • Obligation • Fun Becca C.   12. * IF what motivates a staff member is primarily self-focused, and/OR, • IF they do not fully understand • the mission of RFKC, their commitment leveland longevity will be limited. Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

Sprinters vs Long-Distance Runners • ALL volunteers are appreciated • Long term, committed Volunteers are preferred • People who see the big picture • People dedicated beyond the week at camp • People committed to hanging in there and helping through ‘thick & thin’ • People who understand the ministry & vision of RFKC Becca C.   14. “I’ve been involved because I see that it can make a difference.” • “I keep coming back because I feel so blessed to be able to tell the kids about God’s great love for them.” • “I want to serve God and this has been a great place to do it.” • “I keep involved because I sense God’s pleasure as I serve with RFKC.” • “I was abused and I’m involved because I want to help abused kids and I know RFKC helps kids heal.” • “I’ve been with RFKC all these years because God called me to this ministry and I’ll be involved until He tells me otherwise.” Becca C. What can we do to foster ‘long distance’ volunteers? • Teach about the mission, values & vision of RFKC • Invite to the annual banquet and/or leadership conference • Share some of the kids’ stories • (make it real, personal) • Encourage their ideas, dreams,… related to RFKC • Identify their passion and incorporate it (whenever possible) • Pray for the Holy Spirit’s touch/transformation Becca C.
