  1. Announcements-Friday, 4/4 • Vocabulary is due Monday—you will receive your crossword puzzle today which will be due Tuesday with the Quiz over vocab and DNA discovery and structure. • You will also receive a worksheet: DNA—The Genetic Material (complete front side only) • You should turn in your DNA model and packet now if you did not turn it in yesterday. I do not need late passes for this one. (Happy Friday!!)

  2. After today’s lesson, you should be able to do the following: 4/4 • I can identify the different parts of a DNA molecule and an RNA molecule. 5. I can extract DNA from plant and animal cells to help me understand why it was so difficult for scientists to determine the structure of DNA.

  3. DNA extraction lab Must wear GOGGLES at all times--we are using ethanol which will burn and possibly damage eyes. Dispose of all liquids down the sink. Wash your test tubes with a small drop of dish soap and use the test tube brushes to clean them. Put them on the drying rack to dry. Dispose of all paper towels, cups and trash in the trash can, not the sinks. Return all supplies to their original locations. Bring test tube to the ice container, not the ethanol to your table.

  4. Banana DNA extraction-- • Students on window side of table start this part first. • Use the mortar and pestles to mash the bananas thoroughly. 15 mL is 1-½ teaspoons or ½ tablespoon. Figure out which to use based upon the spoon in your salt water solution. • GENTLY tip the test tube up and down trying not to get bubbles in the tube.

  5. Human DNA extraction • Students on wall side of table start this part first. • Swish the pedialyte around hard like you would mouthwash when you really want to get food out from between your. • 10 mL is 1 teaspoon or 1/3 of a tablespoon. Figure out what you need based upon the spoon in your salt solution. • The person who swishes the pedialyte is the person to tip the test tube up and down—GERMS! • GENTLY tip the test tube up and down trying not to get bubbles in the tube.

  6. Materials Location • Ethanol is on the front lab bench in the stryofoam cooler. • Soap is along the sides at sinks 2, 3, and 4 • Pedialyte is in plastic cups on the front cart • Salt solution is in the container with a measuring spoon on your tables.

  7. DNA lab Conclusion: • Were you successful at seeing your DNA? • What shape is DNA? • What molecules make up the sides of each DNA ladder? • What molecules make up the rungs of the DNA molecule?

  8. DNA lab Exit Ticket: • On note card—put your name, and answer the following to the best of your ability: • A. What is the shape of a DNA molecule? • B. What are the 3 parts of a nucleotide? • C. Who was responsible for discovering the bonding patterns in DNA? • D. Who helped reveal helical nature of DNA?
