  2. What is Hypertension? Sustained elevated blood pressure (BP) High BP can cause damage to heart muscles, the brain, kidneys and other organs Can also cause: stroke, heart attack, and coronary heart disease, or death Can be caused by: Heredity, high salt intake, obesity, and stress (anger)

  3. Systolic Blood Pressure120/80 • The highest pressure or value • Occurs during heart contraction phase (ventricular contraction)

  4. Diastolic Blood Pressure 120/80 The lowest pressure or value Occurs during heart relaxation phase (resting or refilling stage of the contraction)

  5. CLASSIFICATION AND FOLLOW - UP OF BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENT Systolic Bood Diastolic Blood Follow - up Category Pressure ( mm Hg ) Pressure ( mm Hg ) Recommended Optimal < 120 < 80 Recheck in 2 years Normal < 130 < 85 Recheck in 2 years High Normal 130 - 139 85 - 90 Recheck in 1 year Hypertension Confirm within 2 140 - 159 90 - 99 Stage I ( Mild ) months Hypertension Evaluate or refer 160 - 179 100 - 109 Stage II ( Moderate ) within 1 month Hypertension Evaluate or refer > 180 > 110 Stage III ( Severe ) within 1 month Notes : _ Isolated Systolic Hypertension is defined as a Systolic Blood Pressure of 140 or more and Diastolic Blood Pressure less than 90 mm Hg . _ When Systolic and Diastolic Pressure fall into different categories . The higher category should be selected to classify the individual's Blood Pressure .

  6. Routine investigations Urine analysis serum electrolytes and kidney functions test blood glucose serum cholesterol ECG Weight , height and BMI

  7. Ways to Reduce Hypertension Reduce your weight Lower sodium intake less than 5 grams\day Increase fruit and vegetable consumption Avoid Coffee, Tea, Cola. Reduce or quit smoking Regular physical activity (walking, swimming, running etc.) Relaxation Medication

  8. Hypertension is a chronic disease. SO you should take your medicineregularly as your doctor advise.
