  1. Wireless Broadband Opportunity In Ottawa Presentation to the Ottawa Wireless Cluster December 8, 2005

  2. The 20/20 Broadband PlanAs adopted by Ottawa City Council in April, 2003 • Vision: “Ottawa will be a world leader in the provision of affordable, high quality, equitable broadband access to all its citizens. Ottawa’s new broadband network will form an integral part of the infrastructure of the City and will be rapidly deployed, competitive, cost effective, scaleable for future growth and compatible with existing and emerging provincial and national high-speed networks.” • The City’s Broadband strategy outlined the activities required to make this Vision areality within five years of this report

  3. ORCnet – Ottawa’s Rural Communities Network“Pooling demand to make a business case to the private sector” • Grass roots" private/public partnership of local business and community leaders, created in 2001 • Aggregates demand for high-speed services and facilitates broadband deployment in rural areas • Since inception, has seen rural broadband access increase from 2% to +46% - representing 8,300 new households or about 24,000 people or about 1/2 of the target • Availability is expected to reach 50% by the end of this year and virtually 100% by 2008.

  4. What Does Demand AggregationLook Like? • Over 200 people crowded into the Kinburn Client Service Centre on November 22nd 2005 • These folks want broadband NOW! – What an Opportunity!

  5. Ottawa’s Rural Broadband Opportunity • Today, Broadband is not available to 17,600 households or approximately 51,000 people living in about 40 rural villages and hamlets • At 65% uptake (Ottawa’s current overall rate), this represents an untapped market of approximately $15 Million • Bell, Rogers, Storm Internet and Inukshuk have all invested in new broadband infrastructure in rural Ottawa • SimplySurf, Northwind Wireless and Arryba Communications are new companies starting up in 2005

  6. What Eastern Ontario Looks Like • Areas shaded in green have zero or limited availability to broadband • Even white areas in most cases are served with line-of-sight fixed wireless service which may reach as little as 10% of the area covered

  7. What is the City doing to help? • Market Intelligence • City growth & planning trends • Facilitation among many City Departments • Ongoing support of ORCnet • Tower Study & Future Master Plan • Use of City assets • Rural Summit Task Force
