  2. Goethe’s Germany • In 1749, by the time of Goethe’s birth, no official Germany existed. • Frankfurt, Goethe’s birthplace, lay in the Holy Roman Empire. • Goethe’s death in 1832 fell approximately 24 years after the dissolving the HRE and the publishing of Faust.
