  1. 59th Hadron Synchrotron Incoherent effects section meeting August 9th, 2019

  2. Agenda Information and Round Table HSI section meeting

  3. SLM • Need to send feedback on the Fermilab experiment (already contacted Frank and participants) • Updated APT until 2026 • Injector meeting: Richard sent a report. Next meeting will take place end September or beginning October • Reminder that all absence request for official travel have to be done following the completion of an Official Travel Request, even if no cost is foreseen for CERN • Document the results of the PSB space charge studies in a note. • Note on beam-beam coherent effects for HL-LHC. The results of the last parameter set provided by Nikos should be also included (done) HSI section meeting

  4. BEMB • S. Bott gave a presentation on a new procedure regarding internal mobility: • All CERN job opportunities will by default also opened to staff members (ICs and LDs) for internal mobility. • During selection process, a decision on whether to consider either internal OR external candidates has to be taken before the board. • No mixed board can be done and if no candidate is found further the previously made choice, the whole selection process has to start all over. • More information is available in the admin e-guide: https://admin-eguide.web.cern.ch/en/procedure/internal-mobility HSI section meeting

  5. Staff Association • Discussion ongoing about Pension Scheme, in particular about reversibility pension if marriage took place after the pension. HSI section meeting

  6. LMC • Approval of the Minutes (available on the indico site) from the 380th Meeting and Matters Arising (P. Collier) • Plans for repair of the LHC wire scanners in October • Plan to see how to avoid injection of air with high dew point in the tunnel to avoid condensation of water on the CMS detector • SMOG2 can be installed with the present vacuum control system. This will be maintained for the first year of operation. ECR to be submitted to the LMC (approval likely to take place at the LMC on 21/8) • An issue with the amount of data logged for the LINAC4 BPMs has been mentioned. The need will be reviewed at the IEFC. • Oxygen run during Run3, LPC side (B. Petersen) • Overview of the ideas for future LHC ion programme: Run 5: running with Ar-Ar or Kr-Kr collisions, Run 3: O-O and p-O run • For the O-O run: 10/mubarn already interesting. 0.5/nb would provide comprehensive soft physics programme • p-O run: interest from the cosmic ray community. Man interest from LHCb and LHCf. 2/nb for LHCb. Request of low pile-up for LHCf and large separation between bunches 936 bunches) • This would be a special run that should come out from the pp running • Negative polarity of the crossing angle for LHCf • Oxygen run during Run3, Injectors preparation (R. Alemany Fernandez) • Two options for the injectors: O8+ of O4+ from linac3 • O4+ with one injection in LEIR would preferred in terms of space charge and would provide the largest number of ions per bunch in the LHC • Operation with Oxygen could imply to have LINAC3 as Limited stay area. ==> Large uncertainties on the estimates. Need for measurements to confirm the values. Propose to do that during 2021. A High Energy fenced area might have to be established which would limit access to some equipment.PS Switchyard will have to be made inaccessible during the oxygen operation. • Operation of LEIR might imply installing a roof shielding over the LEIR machine if operating with O8+ due to the higher energy of the ion beams. This would not be required with O4+ • Propose to operate with Oxygen in 2023 to avoid potential interference with Pb setting up in particular in SPS (if delays in the commissioning of the slip stacking) • The steps required to validate such proposal have been outlined • Requirements (in particular ABP related): • New source plasma chamber • Beam instrumentation upgrade if running with Oxygen goes beyond the short 2023 run (e.g. during Run 5) • Space charge and IBS studies in the SPS. From the discussion at the SLM it seems that simple scalings should be sufficient. • More detailed estimated of the additional requirements on resources will be necessary. A presentation at the IEFC is expected. • Oxygen run during Run3, LHC preparation (R. Bruce) • Expected commissioning time: 2-3 days for O-O • 1 day for p-O • For ABP it is mostly collimation and optics set-up. The above numbers are based on the assumption that optics correction from the Pb-Pb optics can be used assuming that we take the same cycle • Goal luminosity for O-O could be produced in the time scale of 1 day and 2-2.5 days for the p-O run. • Follow-up of the IEFC to identify the resources needed in the injectors. HSI section meeting

  7. LMC • MKD contact erosion and plans to fix it (V. Senaj) • Nothing relevant for ABP. Seem to be under control with mitigation measures proposed. • DISMAC progress review (J-P. Tock) • For the moment 1 week ahead of schedule • Maintenance of the current leads OK • Special interventions: (ULO search and removal, replacement of the beam screens in 16L2 - quadrupole and nearby dipole, Installation of monitoring for beam induced heat load, Installation of 11 T, For the moment main items on schedule (except 11T)) • No degradation of the resistance of the splices observed • Required rate of diode consolidation not yet reached but getting closer to it (9 diodes/day instead of 10 diodes/day) • Quite a number of non-conformities • Found a lot of debris and even screws in the diode boxes. • ECRS (presented for information) • Installation of the 11 T Dipole Full Assembly in LHC P7 (HL-LHC WP11) - HL-LHC by D. Schoerling (EDMS: LHC-LBH-EC-0001) • Radiation tolerant electronics installation for vacuum gauges in the LHC DS areas by G. Pigny (EDMS: LHC-V-EC-0022). • SMOG2 ECR: new version in reparation • AOB: Status of RB earth faults (M. Bednarek) • RB.A45. Fault located at the lyra in 17R4. Fault appears only at warm when the lyra is compressed and touches a screw. It will be repaired • RB.A56: Localization on the lyra side at B11R5. Close to the connection cryostat. Will be opened in Sept/Oct 2019. • ROD.A56B1: localization between Q22R5 and Q24R5. Circuit affected by another NC between Q28 and Q30 (resistive circuit). One possibility would be to bypass 5 out of 13 magnets (between 22 and 30). HSI section meeting

  8. Space charge Presentations organised at FNAL for the joined experiments this afternoon at 16:00 and on the 7th of August (same time). Foteini started her fellowship, drafted a note on the RDT evaluation from SC and associated PYTHON script Giuliano will visit CERN in August to work with Hannes et al. IC post on incoherent effects (mainly SC) posted on 01/08. Angela drafted a note on IBS for LEIR HSI section meeting
