Freezing rain is caused when you have warm air in-between the ground and the clouds and freezing air near the surface. When the precipitation falls from the cloud, it will generally be snow. As it falls it will hit the warmer part of the air and melt to regular rain,right before it reaches the ground, it enters the below-freezing air and quickly turns into ice on impact. It usually freezes to whatever it lands on. How is freezing rain is formed?
