  2. Lesson Objective • SWBAT assess the role of government within a society as outlined in the constitutions of various countries.

Word of the Day/Initial Activity • Government • The governing body of a nation, state, or community. • The system by which a nation, state, or community is governed. • The Dictator (2012) • While viewing the movie clip, write done observations to help you answer the question below • How would you describe the government of Wadiya? • Describe the relationship between government and the people in the movie. • Discussion • How might a government like the one portrayed in the Dictator differ from our system of government in America?

Major purposes of government • The purpose of a government is dependent on its type: • I.e., Dictatorship = “do what I say or die!!!!!”- Evil guy • I.e., Democracy = “do what I say or be voted out of office!!!!”- avg. person • In a democracy, the government’s purpose is to: • Protecting Public Safety • Providing Order • Regulating the Economy • Advancing Public Welfare • ddj

Politics & Culture • History, religion, cultural develop and morals influence a society’s relationship to its system of government • History creates traditions which translate into political systems • I.e., tribal areas = monarchy/autocratic rulers • I.e., fuedalism = monarchy • I.e., revolutions = democracy • Type of government dictates the relationship it will have with its people • This is outlined in the governments constitution (think mission statement for a company)

Major purposes of government: Turn & Talk Preamble of the US Constitution • We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. • What words stand out? Chart! • 1 minute to write down a response to this question: • Based upon the preamble above and your knowledge of American history, describe the role of the US government within our society.
