WALT: Explain religious attitudes to same sex relationships Christian response to homosexuality Christians are deeply divided over homosexuality Within the Christian Church, there is a wide range of responses to homosexuality, from those who believe it to be unnatural and immoral, to others who accept homosexuality as one form of a loving relationship. The reason for this is because of different interpretations of the Bible What does the Bible say? In the Old Testament it says: “No man is to have sexual relations with another man; God hates that” Jesus never said anything about homosexuality, but it is known that he supported married relationships between men and women. WALT: Explain religious attitudes to same sex relationships Different Christian responses to homosexuality • Roman catholic view: • Accepts that some people are homosexual • Homosexual activity is a sin • Homosexual thoughts are not a sin • They teach that homosexuals should be treated with respect but they must control their feelings by being celibate • Quakers view: • “It is the nature and quality of a relationship that matters; one must not judge it by its outward appearance but by its inner worth” (Quaker faith and practice) • Generally Quakers accept homosexual relationships • Church of England: • Very controversial topic • Some Anglicans argue that sex is for having children and homosexuality is condemned in the Bible • Others argue that the Bible has to be interpreted for modern society and it contains stories of great love between people of the same sex (David and Jonathan) • Jesus taught that it is love which matters most Success criteria:To achieve a C grade: You need to be able to state points of view To achieve a B grade: You need to be able to give reasons for points of view To achieve an A grade: You need to be able to support reasons for points of view
