Early Life • Born on July 10, 1871 in Auteuil, France • Full name “Valentin Louis Georges Eugéne Marcel Proust” • Family was well known and wealthy • Nervous and sickly child • Had 1st asthma attack at age 9
Education • Enrolled in the Lycèe Condorcet • Took a break after 2 years of study with a year of military service • Returned to study law and philosophy
Early Work • 1892-1893: Wrote short stories and articles for the journals Le Banquet and La Revue Blanche • 1896: First published book- Les Plaisirs et les jours • 1899: Abandons first attempt at a major work
Struggle For Inspiration • 1903: His father dies, followed by his mother’s death 2 years later • Stricken with grief he ends up in a sanatorium for little less than 2 months • Continues writing articles and short stories • 1909: Starts work on novel
In Search of Lost Time • Started working on it in 1909 • Found great inspiration from tea and toast which reminded him of his youth in his grandfather’s garden • Worked on it until his death • Contained 7 Volumes
