  2. Setting • Audience: Thessalonian Christians • Location of writing: Corinth • Date of letter: Months after first letter in AD 51-52 • Historical Setting: Second Missionary Journey • Purpose: • Clarify points in first letter • Deal with false teaching

  4. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-22 • v14-22 – Exhortation on things to do • Warn the unruly • ASV: Encourage the fainthearted • Support the weak • Be patient toward all men • Follow that which is good to all men • Rejoice • Pray without ceasing • Give thanks for this is the will of God for you • Quench not the Spirit • Do not despise prophetic utterances • Prove all things and hold to that which is good • ASV, NIV, NKJV: Abstain from every form of evil vs. KJV: Abstain from all appearance of evil

  5. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-28 • v23-28: Closing Statements • Paul lets them know he is praying on their behalf. • God is faithful. He will do what he says. • Paul asks for the prayers of the saints. • Greet all brethren as individuals that you have a sincere desire for their souls. • He encouraged the sharing of the letter. • Specifically requests that grace be upon them.

  6. 2 Thessalonians 5:1-12 • v1-2: Salutation • v1: Author and recipients • v2: Blessing • Paul opens letting them know that he desires good things for them. • v3-12: Encouragement • v3: Paul recognizes that their faith is growing and that they love their fellow brethren. • v4: Paul lets them know they are being used as examples of patience and faith. • v5: The persecutions that they are enduring shows that they are living in a way to be recognized as Christians.

  7. 2 Thessalonians 5:1-12 • v3-12: Encouragement (cont.) • v6-10: God is just. • God will punish their persecutors. • God will give the faithful relief. • God will punish those that do not know him and those that do not obey the gospel of Christ. • This will occur in the second coming. • The punishment will be eternal destruction. • The punishment will include being away from God and His glory.

  8. 2 Thessalonians 5:1-12 • v3-12: Encouragement (cont.) • v11-12: Paul’s prayer for them. • Prays regularly for them. • Prays they will be considered worthy of this calling through their conduct • Prays that God will help and bless them in their conduct as Christians • Prays that all of this will be for the good of the gospel and them. • “Sandwich Technique” • Tough messages are sandwiched between encouragement.
