  1. Unit 210: Support children and young people’s playThe importance of play

  2. Playwork principles • Hello my name is Peter and I am a playworker in an out of schools club. Let me tell you a few things about play and the value of play. First of all we will look at the Playwork Principles These Principles establish the professional and ethical framework for playwork. One of these principles is: • ‘All children and young people need to play. The impulse to play is innate. Play is a biological, psychological and social necessity, and is fundamental to the healthy development and well being of individuals and communities’.

  3. The UN Convention on the rights of the child • The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is a benchmark for measuring a nation’s treatment of its children. Article 31 of the UN Convention states that: • every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.

  4. What is play? • The New Policy Institute and the Children’s Play Council, published a literature review on The Value of Children’s Play and Play Provision and these are some of the things the review said about play. • “Play is an essential part of every child’s life and vital to processes of human development. It provides the mechanism for children to explore the world around them and the medium through which skills are developed and practised. It is essential for physical, emotional and spiritual growth, intellectual and educational development, and acquiring social and behavioural skills” (Charter for Children’s Play 1998)

  5. Importance of play • The National Playgrounds state that: • ‘Play is central to the development of good physical and mental health; the physical activity involved in most play provides exercise, encourages co-ordination and develops skills for the growing child. With respect to mental health, “many of the attributes enhanced by play are found to be helpful to developing resilience…” (to stressful • events’ (NPFA, 2000).

  6. Cont. • Other researchers believe that: • ‘The physical activity involved in energetic play is traditionally recognised as of benefit to children in terms of providing exercise. This aspect is especially topical given the current widespread concerns about children leading more sedentary life-styles and increased rates of obesity.’ (Dietz, 2001; Crespo et al, 2001).

  7. The role of play in development • Tobin [1997] reports that play is essential for brain development and if children are deprived of play this will have a harmful effect on brain growth. • It is very important that as playworkers we realise the value of play for children and young people. I will end with another of the playwork principles that you should always apply to your work: • ‘The role of the playworker is to support all children and young people in the creation of a space in which they can play’. • Source: • Manwaring, B. and Taylor, C. [2006] The Benefits of Play and Playwork, Skills Active.
