  1. What is biology? The Characteristics of Life On the following slides, the green sections summarize key information and vocabulary terms are underlined.

  2. What is Biology? • Our science is biology; in Latin that means: bio- = life, -ology = study of • The goal of biology is the study of living organisms to understand their relationships with one another and the environment. Image

  3. Common Features of Living Things • All life is connection and exhibits common features: • Order – life has organization and structure • Living things can be made up of one cell or billions of cells, but all parts functionin an orderly, living system. • "Typical animal cell." Animal Sciences. Ed. Allan B. Cobb. New York: Macmillan Reference USA, 2010. Science In Context. Web. 5 Sept. 2013.

  4. Common Features of Living Things • Reproduction – living things reproduce to make more living things Spring is nesting season for egrets along South Carolina's waterways. The area's wetlands also attract ospreys, white ibises, wood storks, and other birds. Photograph by Oskar Neuhold, National Geographic Your Shot

  5. Common Features of Living Things • Growth & development – genetic material within the cells of all living things control growth and development • "DNA and individual characteristics." Experiment Central. U*X*L, 2010. Science In Context. Web. 5 Sept. 2013.

  6. Common Features of Living Things • Energy – living things take in energy and use it for life’s processes An ornate day gecko laps nectar from tree blossoms on Mauritius. Rare pollinators, bug-eating lizards may substitute on islands where neither pollinators nor predators are plentiful—filling a niche held by others on the mainland.  Photograph by Mark W. 7. Common Features of Living Things • Regulation – organisms control their internal environment • EX The large ears of the jack rabbit not only alert it to predators, but allow it to stay cool in the heat. • Homeostasis: the steady state of an organisms internal environment Photograph by Annie Griffiths Belt

  8. Common Features of Living Things • Response – they respond to stimuli • EX Venus fly trap closes when triggered • EX Sunflowers bend towards the sun Image

  9. Common Features of Living Things • Adaptation – species are able to adapt to increase survival and evolve over time Most leafy plants cool themselves during the day by opening their pores. Because their pores open only at night, cacti cannot take advantage of such cooling. They adapt to desert heat by internal mechanisms. Teddybearcholla, for instance, can withstand an air temperature of 138 degrees F. Most other plants would literally cook at this temperature! From Joshua Tree National Park
