  3. The Internet and the Web • Large network that connects smaller networks globally • Launched in 1969 • National computer network • US funded project called ARPANET • World Wide Web introducedin 1992 at CERN

  4. The Internet and the Web • It is made up of wires, cables, and satellites. • The Web provides a multimedia interface for resources on the Internet. • It is also known as the World Wide Web (WWW).

  20. Example of application from Internet (Instructive Approach) AAAmath server (http://www.aaamath.com/) • focuses on exercises in basic Math's operations for children. An application training adding of numbers from 1 to 100 with simple statistics of results and showing the correct result in case of an error.

FreeENGLISH (http://www.freeenglish.net/) offers exercises for teaching English to children. • The server offers various exercises that help to improve the skills in some typically difficult areas by interactive manner. • there is a multiple-choice test and there are many animated exercises with sound • Other exercises are based on different principles • guessing of a word by choosing letters (Hangman), • spelling of the heard word, • a conversation with a choice of potentially suitable answers,.

Example of application from Internet (Constructive Approach) • The simulation is one of the most constrictive forms of application. • Generally it is a model of a certain situation that allows the user to participate actively on the actions and experiment. • In many cases even applications that are originally designed as games may serve some educational purposes. • For instance, there are constructive games developing logical thinking at the server of the LEGO company (http://www.lego.com/build/).

Digital library • Digital library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats (as opposed to print, microform, or other media) and accessible by computers. • Shift of information from traditional library to digital library is to provide better delivery of information than was not possible in the past (Arms, 2000).

Digital library - advantage • Bring the libraries closer to the users- more accessible, and increases its usage. • Computer technology is used for searching and browsing - better than manual methods for finding information. • Information can be shared on a network makes it available to everyone. • Information is always available- 24/7
