Unit 1 – Exploration and Colonization • New England Colonies: Blue for water (fishing, boats), Puritans, Self-Government, 1620 Mayflower Compact • Middle Colonies: Red for bread (grain), Quakers, Self-Government • Southern Colonies: Green for Agriculture, Catholics, Representative Government; 1607 Jamestown, VA

  3. Essential Questions • 1. What are the reasons for European exploration and colonization of North America? • 2. What are the PEGS of the colonial regions? • 3. Explain why 1607 and 1620 are important dates. • 4. Name the founding documents that established/influenced self-government (4).

  4. Unit 2 – American Revolution • Proclamation  Appalachian • Stamp Act – Tax on paper • 1776 Declaration of Independence • Grievance – a complaint • Lexington – first battle • Saratoga – turning point • Yorktown – last battle • Treaty of Paris 1783

  5. Essential Questions • 1. Name 4 economic policies that were enforced by King George III following the French and Indian war. • 2. Name 3 people significant to the American Revolution and their key role. • 3. Place the 4 key battles and the treaty that ended the war on a timeline.

Unit 3 - The Constitution • Articles of Confederation: extremely weak, no president, no taxes, no military • Shays Rebellion: revealed the weaknesses of the AOC • Federalists: For the Constitution • Anti-Federalists: Against the Constitution • September 17, 1787: Ratification of the Constitution

  7. Bill of Rights: Protects individual freedoms • 1st Amendment: freedom of...... RAPPS (religion, assembly, petition, press, speech) • 2nd Amendment: make a gun with your fingers (right to bear arms) • 3rd Amendment: 3 words, no quartering soldiers • 4th Amendment: 4 words, make a W with your fingers (no unreasonable search/seizures, warrants) • 5th Amendment: you have the right too... remain silent, an attorney, double jeopardy, due process • 6th Amendment: speedy trial • 7th Amendment: jury in civil cases (suing someone) • 8th Amendment: hangman, no cruel or unusual punishment • 9th Amendment: people have more rights • 10th Amendment: states have more rights

  8. 7 Principles of the Constitution: FLIPRoCS • Federalism: Flags, power shared between state and national government • Limited Government: limits the government • Individual Rights: gives individuals rights • Popular Sovereignty: People have power • REPublicanism: REPresentatives are elected • Checks and Balances: check the other branches • Separation of powers: separate but...equal

  9. Marbury v. Madison: established Judicial Review, John Marshall • 2/3 Congress + 3/4 States = 1 Amendment • Northwest Ordinance: New States; allows a territory to become a state when they have 60,000 people

  10. Essential Questions • 1. Name what event revealed the weaknesses of the AOC and list 3 of those weaknesses. • 2. Name the group who was opposed to the constitution and the group who wanted to ratify it and 2 people from each group. • 3. List the first 10 amendments of the constitution. • 4. List the 7 principles and define them in your own words. • 5. List 5 documents that influenced the constitution. • 6. What Supreme court case and Supreme Court Justice established the Judicial Review process.

Essential Questions Unit 6/7 • Name 3 major inventions and their inventor. • What is called when people move from rural areas to the city centers to find jobs. • Name the 3 major immigrant groups and why they came over. • Name 3 major reform movements and the key leader. • What religious movement sparked reform during the 1800’s?

  16. Unit 8 – Manifest Destiny • Manifest  Go West • 1849: Gold Miners in California, 49er Gold Miner • Mormon Trail: ended in Salt Lake City, Utah, Joseph Smith • James K. Polk  1844, Manifest Destiny

  17. Land Acquisitions: • 13 Colonies • Treaty of Paris 1783 • Louisiana Purchase 1803 • Adams-Onis Treaty (Florida) 1819 • Republic of Texas 1845 • Oregon Territory from British in 1848 • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo/Mexican Cession 1848 • Gadsden Purchase 1853, build railroads around Rocky Mts.

  19. Unit 9 & 10 • North/Union: Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant (USG) • South/Confederacy: Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee • Border States: slave owning Union states that did not want to choose a side • USG – Ulysses S. Grant/United States General • Ft. Sumter – First Battle • Antietam – bloodiest battle in history • Vicksburg – gave Union control of the Mississippi River • Gettysburg – turning point of the Civil War • Appomattox Courthouse – ended the war, South surrendered • 1861 – 1865: Years of the Civil War

Reconstruction Amendments: • 13th Amendment: Free, frees the slaves • 14th Amendment: Citizens, makes African Americans citizens • 15th Amendment: Vote, allows African American men to vote • Freedmans Bureau: supervised all relief and educational activities for freemen • Black Codes: laws to limit opportunities for African Americans • Hiram Rhodes Revels: first African American senator • Ku Klux Klan: secret society to terrorize African Americans and their supporters • Homestead Act: grant 160 acres of land to a family • Morrill Act: established colleges in Western Territory
