Sol Kerzner • The owner, creator and mastermind behind both Atlantis Hotels is South African native Sol Kerzner, CEO and chairman of Kerzner International Holdings Ltd. • Prior to the birth of the Atlantis hotels, Kerzner's career experience in the resort and casino industries spanned the continents for more than 40 years. This included the largest hotel chain in South Africa, tourism development in the Bahamas, as well as dozens of other hotel and gaming operations in the United States and Mauritius. • Kerzner began work on the Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas in 1994, two years after he was awarded a place in the U.S. Gaming Hall of Fame. He was the first non-American to receive the honor.
Art and Legend • Atlantis was inspired by the concept of bringing the legend of the lost city of Atlantis to life. • The legendary island of antiquity is said to have been in the Mediterranean, the Atlantic or even the Caribbean. • The decoration and art of the Atlantis hotels caters to the legendary feel of the exotic with Mediterranean-style art, aquatic life theme and gilded luxury as well as whimsical media, such as glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly.
Atlantis Paradise Island • The Atlantis Paradise Island Casino and Resort is on Nassau in the Bahamas. • The old 1,150-room resort was transformed into a 2,300-room casino resort with the largest man-made marine aquarium in the world. • Initial construction lasted more than four years, and cost an unprecedented $800 million. • Aside from the initial 1,200 Royal Tower rooms of the resort, the Atlantis focused on bring the beauty of the surroundings into the resort; the resort is home to 50,000 sea creatures living in 11 million gallons of water. • The casino inside the resort became the largest in the Caribbean, and was the pioneer of its time for being the first naturally lit casino with sprawling windows. • In 2007 the resort underwent a $1 billion expansion, including the Cove Atlantis condo-hotel, The Reef Atlantis dolphin center and the 63-acre Aquaventure.
