  2. OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE ‘DISCERNING.’ ”BUT EXAMINEEVERYTHINGCAREFULLY; “ (5:21-22) • PAUL EXHORTS THE THESSALONIANS TO BE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNING, • DIVINE TRUTH FROM ERROR AND HALF-TRUTH. • GOOD FROM EVIL. • RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM SIN. • HE COMMANDS THEM TO AVOID ANY TEACHINGS, INFLUENCES, OR BEHAVIORS THAT WOULD DISPLEASE GOD. “. . . . . . . . BE NO MORE CHILDREN, TOSSED TO AND FRO, AND CARRIED ABOUT BY EVERY WIND OF DOCTRINE, “ (EPH. 4:14-15) “BELOVED, BELIEVE NOT EVERY SPIRIT, BUT TRY THE SPIRITS WHETHER THEY ARE OF GOD: BECAUSE MANY FALSE PROPHETS ARE GONE OUT INTO THE WORLD. “ (1 JN. 4:1)

  3. ONCE YOU “EXAMINE EVERYTHING,” “HOLD FAST TO THAT WHICH IS GOOD.” (5:21) • EMBRACE IT WHOLEHEARTEDLY! • MAKE IT YOUR OWN! “. . . . . . . . ABHOR THAT WHICH IS EVIL; CLEAVE TO THAT WHICH IS GOOD.“ (ROM. 12:9) “. . . . . . . I WOULD HAVE YOU WISE UNTO THAT WHICH IS GOOD, AND SIMPLE CONCERNING EVIL.“ (ROM. 16:19) “FINALLY, BRETHREN, WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE TRUE, WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE HONEST, WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE JUST, WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE PURE, WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE LOVELY, WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE OF GOOD REPORT; IF THERE BE ANY VIRTUE, AND IF THERE BE ANY PRAISE,THINK ON THESE THINGS. “ (PHIL. 4:8)

  4. PAUL FURTHER WARNS THE THESSALONIANS TO, “ABSTAIN FROM ALL APPEARANCE OF EVIL.” (5:22) • “ABSTAIN” – STAY AWAY FROM. • BELIEVER’S SHOULD PRACTICE 100% AVOIDANCE OF ANY EVIL • NOWHERE DOES SCRIPTURE PERMIT BELIEVERS TO EXPOSE THEMSELVES TO THE INFLUENCE OF WHAT IS FALSE OR EVIL, RATHER, FLEE (RUN) FROM THEM. • “APPEARANCE” – EVEN THAT WHICH LOOKS LIKE SIN; LEADS TO IT; BORDERS UPON IT. “. . . . . . . . FLEE THESE THINGS; AND FOLLOW AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS, GODLINESS, FAITH, LOVE, PATIENCE, MEEKNESS. FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT . “ (1 TIM. 6:11-12)

  5. ”DEPART FROM EVIL, AND DO GOOD; SEEK PEACE, AND PURSUE IT. “ (PS. 34:14) “YE THAT LOVE THE LORD, HATE EVIL: HE PRESERVETH THE SOULS OF HIS SAINTS; HE DELIVERETH THEM OUT OF THE HAND OF THE WICKED. “ (PS. 97:10) “BE NOT WISE IN THINE OWN EYES: FEAR THE LORD, AND DEPART FROM EVIL. “ (PROV. 3:7) “A WISE MAN FEARETH, AND DEPARTETH FROM EVIL: BUT THE FOOL RAGETH, AND IS CONFIDENT. “ (PROV. 14:16) “ A PRUDENT MAN FORESEETH THE EVIL, AND HIDETH HIMSELF: BUT THE SIMPLE PASS ON, AND ARE PUNISHED. “ (PROV. 22:3)

  6. PAUL PRAYS FOR COMPLETE SANCTIFICATION. ”AND THE VERY GOD OF PEACE SANCTIFY YOU WHOLLY; AND I PRAY GOD YOUR WHOLE SPIRIT AND SOUL AND BODY BE PRESERVED BLAMELESS UNTO THE COMING OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. “ (5:23) • SANCTIFICATION – IS THE ONGOING SPIRITUAL PROCESS BY WHICH GOD INCREASINGLY SETS BELIEVERS APART FROM SIN AND MOVES THEM TOWARD HOLINESS. • GOD IS THE ONLY SOURCE OF POWER FOR OBEYING ANY EXHORTATION. GOD ALONE SANCTIFIES THE OBEDIENT BELIEVER. • THOSE WHOM GOD JUSTIFIES HE ALSO SANCTIFIES—ULTIMATE SANCTIFICATION “FOR WHOM HE DID FOREKNOW, HE ALSO DID PREDESTINATE TO BE CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE OF HIS SON . . . . . . . . MOREOVER WHOM HE DID PREDESTINATE, THEM HE ALSO CALLED: AND WHOM HE CALLED, THEM HE ALSO JUSTIFIED: AND WHOM HE JUSTIFIED, THEM HE ALSO GLORIFIED. “ (ROM. 8:28929)
