  1. The Teacher’s Funeral by Richard Peck

  2. Richard Peck AUTHOR Richard Peck was born in 1934 in Decatur, Illinois, a town he describes as quiet and safe. His mother, Virginia, was a dietitian and his father, Wayne, was a merchant who often rode his Harley Davidson to work.Richard was crazy about cars when he was young and took pride in the fact that he could instantly identify the make and model of each on-coming car. He went to college in Exeter, England and then served a stint in the army. He then became a junior high school teacher. He taught in Illinois and in New York City. Then his real steps into the writing profession began.

  3. Setting The setting of this story begins in the hot summer of August of 1904 in rural Indiana. Most of the action takes place in a one room schoolhouse in Sycamore Township.

  4. CHARACTERS

  5. Russell Culver A 15 year old from whose point of view this story is told. Russell detests school and dreams of running off to the Dakotas to drive the big steam combines during harvest.

  6. Tansy Russell’s older sister who becomes the teacher at the one room schoolhouse. Tansy is determined to get Russell through school in spite of himself.

  7. Charlie Parr Russell’s best friend, the son of a preacher, gives up on the shared dream of going off to the Dakotas because he has his eye on Russell’s sister, Tansy.

  8. Glenn Tarbox Glenn decides to go to school and that gives Tansy the eight students that she needs. Glenn and Russell “blow” up the stove one morning trying to clean out the pipes. Glenn goes to school and eventually weds Tansy.

  9. Lloyd Culver Russell’s ten year brother, who tries to follow in Russell’s footsteps. Russell fails to take responsibility for the trouble he sometimes gets Lloyd into until Tansy points out the error of his ways.

  10. Major Events • The Case Special comes to town. • Miss Myrt Arbuckle dies. • Culver family has a near miss with bullet #2 race car. • Tansy becomes the teacher at Hominy Ridge school. • Charlie and Glenn fight over Tansy. • Tansy examined by the school superintendent.

  12. Story Plot Climax Tansy is examined by the school superintendent. Glenn and Russell “blow” up the school. Falling Action Rising Action Charlie and Glenn fight over Tansy. Tansy is appointed to be the teacher at Hominiy Ridge School. Russell and Lloyd find out about Mrs. Myrt’s death. Tansy explains to Russell why she took the teaching job. Miss Myrt Arbuckle dies. Resolution Narrator explains what each character eventually does in life. The Case Special comes to town. Exposition

  13. Theme • Perseverance • Tansy works hard to be a good teacher even with all the trials she faces.

  14. Personal Reflection • I like this story because of humorous fixes that the characters find themselves in. This story appeals to me since I am a teacher. • The only thing I didn’t like about this story is that there is no sequel.

  15. Problem Russell hates school. His sister has just become the teacher, so he has no choice but to do well. Solution Russell grows up some and realizes that part of the reason that Tansy has worked so hard was for him. He finally accepts this and goes on to finish school.
