  7. Teams in the Middle School The structure of teams Why have teams? Why location matters

  8. Relationships are KEY to a successful Middle School experience • “The connection between young adolescents’ ability to learn and the security that comes from close, trusting relationships with adults and peers in the middle grades school is similar to the need of infants and children for attachment as a basis for early learning.” • “A nurturing school community leads children to identify with the community and commit to its values and goals.” -Turning Points 2000 Relationships are built by using the “Team” structure

  9. The structure of Teams(a.k.a. Communities, Crews) • 6th grade teams consist of 3 teachers and a student load of 112 students. • 7th-8th grade teams consist of 4 teachers and a student load of 112 students. • The team includes all core areas: language arts, math, science, and social studies. World language teachers are affiliated with teams.

  10. Why Teams in Middle School?(a.k.a. Communities, Crews) • Teams offer students the most direct path for forging stable relationships with teachers and peers. • Teams provide peer group affiliation –important for adolescent development, resulting in higher achievement and fewer disciplinary problems. • Teams allow teachers greater opportunities to collaborate, foster joint learning opportunities and problem solving, and create a supportive, close-knit network of professionals. This translates into more effective teaching and learning. • Teams increase parent/guardian communication.

Team classrooms need to be located with close proximity to one another to: • result in fewer disciplinary issues; • decrease interaction between different grade levels and age groups; • foster relationships through a greater sense of unity; • increase opportunities for teacher contact –both formal and informal (student to teacher AND teacher to teacher); • improve efficiency in changing classes, and allow for flexible scheduling.

Educational Uses of an Auditorium • Team/Grade level meetings (30/year) • Guest speakers/programs (12/year) • Bullying, Alcohol Awareness, Veterans’ Day, Magazine Drive, Visiting authors, etc. • Multimedia uses – e.g., presentations/films (20/year) • Transitions: 5th to 6th/ 8th to 9th (4/year) • Extracurricular clubs • Drama – (daily from Feb-April) • Student council (2x/month) • Mock trial (10/year) • Awards Presentations (team level 1x/month; school level 1x/year) • Closing Exercises (1x/year)

Educational Uses of an Auditorium • Performance Center • 6 concert nights • 4 weeks of daily rehearsal space prior to concerts for orchestra, band, chorus, chamber band, chamber orchestra, and chamber chorus • Madrigals (2 weeks plus 2 performances) • Dance team (weekly from Nov-Jan) • “Extra” concerts for auditioned ensembles (4-5/year) • Drama – Rehearsal Space (Feb-April) 3 performances • Music articulation concerts (5th-6th and 8th-9th) • Faculty Uses: • Professional Development space • Some teams present to parents

Other uses of Auditorium: • Behavior/Expectations Review – at the start of the year (8 team meetings reduced to 3 grade level meetings) • 8th graders introduced to HS schedule • 8th graders introduced to alternative HS programs • No longer taking Library or Band room away from students when meetings are held • Outside groups using team room will no longer impact program delivery • Unified Arts course selection presentation

Auditorium Benefits the Community • Parent Functions • PTSA meetings, Principal Coffees • Parent programs (Internet safety, Habits of Mind, Curriculum related) • Orientation for 5th grade parents • Open House • Cultural Center for local organizations, i.e., Fairfield Woods Branch Library, drama/dance performances, fundraisers, etc.

  18. Use of the Gym as an Auditorium • Labor intensive • Potential damage to flooring • Forced to cancel Phys. Ed. classes due to space loss

No AuditoriumImpact on PE/ Extra-Curricular: • We currently use our Gymnasium as an Auditorium at least 35 times per year. • That means we will cancel PE classes for all or part of 35 days per year. • Drama Club uses Gym after school: • Shortened Basketball season • No after-school intramural sports in Feb-April
