Fruit of the Spirit • Week Eight: Self-Control
TCB: • Website up and running!!! • Tonight: Final in class meeting • Next Wed. December 9th, 8PM Casa de Roby Fiesta • 1322 Twp. Road 685 • Class Evaluation: Ryan • Prayer Requests?
Greek: • self-control • or temperance
Uses in Scripture: • Self-Control: • 4 times • 3 verses • 3 different authors
Self-Control: Working Definition • The idea that we are called to be masters of that which we’ve been given: • Physically: in regard to lust, gluttony, and sloth • Mentally: in regard to lust, evil desires, and pride • Spiritually: in regard to challenging and growing our faith, taking risks of obedience • Emotionally: to not be ruled by our emotions, but to rule them
Challenge One: Physical • Physically: I’m going to die anyway, so let’s not get caught up in maintaining what is dying. (Jick Gestalt example.) • Point: How you treat what you’ve been given shows a great deal about your level or respect and appreciation toward the giver.
Challenge Two: Mental • In a world that bombards you with sensual images, it is very difficult to keep your mind, let alone your eyes (or if you are single, your body) pure. • Matthew 5:30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast [it] from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. • Real Issue: We don’t deal ruthlessly with sin. • examples of how to...
Challenge Three: Spiritual • Many of us seek a “nook” to let our faith burrow into. It’s warm, we have fellowship there, it incubates there, it dies there. • If we are obedient to God’s call, we will have to take risks with our faith: • leaving the comfort of our surroundings to follow God’s call (college, new job, missions, etc.) • leaving the comfort of our theology to be challenged, to argue, to grow. • leaving the comfort of our practices to experience other avenues that we can be used by God.
Challenge Four: Emotional • This may surprise you, but I have really thin skin. I seethe those that I can’t have an immediate audience with. I have fictional arguments with them in car, or at home. Why? Because I’ve not mastered my emotional responses. • This doesn’t mean to strangle, or even muffle your emotional response (that could lead to worse issues). It means to: • 1. Acknowledge what you are feeling (assign an “anxiety number”) • 2. Consider evidence that it’s legitimate (rational) • 3. Consider evidence that it’s not legitimate • 4. Re-evaluate your feeling (assign a new number)
