  1. TRAINING CHARON VAX-AXP SPIE S.A DSTI October 2011 PARIS

  2. Profil • electrical and mechanical engineering • HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) services • energy and communication systems SPIE enhances the quality of life by helping local and regional authorities and companies design, build, operate and maintain facilities that are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. European leader in :

  3. 2010 Key figures • More than 29,000 employees • 400 locations • 30 countries • Pro forma turnover : €3.75 billion • Operating profit from ordinary activities : €192.3 million For more informations : www.spie.com

  4. Our Information System Internet Headquarters 9 French subsidiaries Data center SPIE’s WAN 3 Foreign subsidiaries hundreds commercial agencies

  5. Context • Set of critical middle-office homemade software managing : • Purchases • Sales • Orders • Equipments • Suppliers and supplies • … • Still evolving and supported for 7 subsidiaries. SPIE’s WAN Total of 23 Alpha Servers (DS20E,DS20,AS800) for production & development. Typical configuration for a subsidiary : LAN IAS IAS Oracle DB Alpha server DS20E Application server 1 Alpha server DS20E Application server 2 Alpha server DS20E Database Hardware : DS20E O.S : Tru64 5.1B Database : Oracle 8i Application server : iAS 8i Development language : Forms 6i

  6. Limitations & constraints End 2008 Limitations: High hardware maintenance cost (hardware failures). Disk space limited. 3 servers to manage and supervise for 1 application instance. Performances growth limited. Constraints : Each subsidiary has it’s own hardware. No software version modification. Keep the same quality of service.

  7. Tests, master copy • Dell/Charon Master copy setup -- end of 2009. restore /usr 1 - restore / and /usr from dump of actual DS20E restore / 2 - Clean devices, doconfig, install latest patch kit dka0 dka100 dka0 3 - add disks for application & data file systems Clone Windows using RAID1 rebuild capability dka100 Restore from backup dkb100 dka200 Software (Oracle, iAS, backup …) Database Spie Forms Binaries • Master copy and migrationmethods (clone) tests -- 2010 Charon-AXP and Hardware tests (I/O, cpu, Oracle) -- middle of 2009.

  8. 9. Migration (2010) • 7 subsidiaries : • 19 production DS20E • 4 non-production servers 3 DS20E 3 DS20E 3 DS20E 3 DS20E 4 DS20E 2 DS20E 1 DS20E • Migration Step 1 : • Move the 19 DS20E to the SPIE headquarters.

  10. Migration (2010) Step 2 : Clone Windows 2k3 from the master copy on the 12 Dell R610 and install Charon-Axp license keys. Step 3 : Backup the non-O.S file systems from the actual DS20E and restore them on the Charon-AXP corresponding file systems Step 4 : Turn off the old DS20E.

  11. Benefits of Charon-AXP What’s next … • ES40 evolution (1 more CPU and 4GB SDRAM). • Improve the Disaster Recovery Plan. • SAN tests for better I/O performances. Low hardware maintenance (up-to-date hardware with 3 year warranty). Less servers to manage => less space/electrical consumption/cooling. Performances and stability enhancement. Easy to update : add/upgrade CPU, SDRAM, disks or change server. Quick migration : no rewriting and qualifications tests for applications and processes. No change for application users, developers and Unix administrators.

  12. Key actors • Consulting, tests • Master copy conception • Tru64 and Charon-AXP expert • Studies and tests • Technical architecture • Migration • Support • Evaluation license keys
