The Paleolithic age vs the Neolithic age. By Niklas Evans, Period 7
When were the Paleolithic and the Neolithic ages? • The Paleolithic age was from around 3 million years BC to around 8000 BC • The Neolithic age was from around 8000 BC to around 3000 BC
Getting Food-Paleolithic • The Paleolithic Age people were hunter-gatherers • They hunted to get food • This meant that they had to follow prey in order to sustain a steady food supply • They also gathered food such as berries • This meant that as food supplies ran out in an area they had to find new places to get food
Getting food-Neolithic • The people in the Neolithic Age were farmers • This is the main difference that set them apart from the Paleolithic Age peoples • As farming was created, people could settle down into towns and villages because they no longer needed to chase their food supplies
living conditions in the Paleolithic age • As food was hard to come by during the Paleolithic Age, people lived in small, nomadic tribes. • They moved around and followed their food sources • They often lived in caves and other natural shelters while they hunted and gathered in a specific area and then they moved on to another area • As groups got too big they would split up into smaller groups and go their separate ways
Living conditions in the Neolithic age • As farming was created in the Neolithic Age, the need to move around to chase food was eliminated. • Instead, they formed small villages and built permanent houses and structures to live in • Slowly, governments and other public services were established which led to the creation of civilization
Religion in the Paleolithic age • The Paleolithic Age, people worshiped animals • There is evidence of early Paleolithic burials • There was one case where a human was buried with a Panther’s paw • This shows that animals were very important to the Paleolithic society and sometimes animal parts were kept as trophies of the hunt and had a lot of sentimental value
Religion in theNeolithic age • They buried the dead in graves, along with their weapons, pottery, food and drink in the belief that these things were required after death. • The warships plants and animals as their ancestors and protectors • They also worship forces of nature such as the sun, the moon, and stars believing that they had special powers • They also worshipped clay figurines of “Mother Goddess” believing that that would cause the fertility of their land to increase.
Innovations of the Paleolithic age • The people in the Paleolithic age created the first tools out of bones, stone, and wood • They learned how to use fire to keep warm, for light, and to harden tools such as spearheads • They created the hand ax which was used to sort of like a modern-day Swiss Army knife in that it had a great variety of uses and almost everybody had one
Innovations of the Neolithic age • The Neolithic Age farming was created • People learn how to build houses and permanent villages • They created metal tools • They learned how to domesticate animals • They created and used pottery
The Neolithic Revolution • As a result of the Neolithic Revolution life was changed in many ways • People became social and lived in groups permanently • They created farming which then created excess crops and resulted in the beginning of trading • All of this slowly resulted in the beginnings of civilization • This set the foundation for modern day civilizations such as America
