  3. Mid 20th century • Referred to unmarried people • Gay > “Queer”, “Homosexual” • Mental illness • Was considered very offensive, and accusation of serious criminal activity. • Sexual Offences Act 1967 (British) • Widely used in literature and entertainment

Sexual orientation, identity, behavior • Sexual orientation describes “pattern of sexual attraction”, “behavior”, “identity” • Sexual attraction, behavior != identity • sexual orientation falls along a continuum • Sexual orientation develops across a person's lifetime • LGB individuals are often raised in communities that are either ignorant of or openly hostile toward homosexuality

  6. Legality • Most nations do not impede consensual sex above age of consent • Some recognize identical rights, protection, privilege for homosexual family • Employment, housing, hate discrimination • May face to death penalty in Iran and parts of Nigeria

  7. Military Service • Most western countries allows LGT to serve in military service • China bans gays and lesbians outright • Israel is the only country in middle east to recruit LGT

  8. Marriage • Netherland first legalized in 2001 • Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway and Sweden • Parts of USA: Massachussets, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont • Some countries allows child adoption, parenting in homosexual family
