Tennessee SPI Objective:Analyze structural, behavioral, and physiological adaptations to predict which populations are likely to survive in a particular environment. Essential Question(s) 1) What are the three types of adaptations? 2) What are five examples of how organisms adapt? 3)What is natural selection and explain each step? 4) Explain bottlenecking and illustrate.
An adaptation is a characteristic that improves an individual’s ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
Three types of adaptations that help organisms survive are structural, behavioral, andphysiological. Structural adaptations – What an organism is; Shape and form of the body Behavioral adaptations – What an organism does. Physiological adaptations – Adaptatons that deal with the internal body makeup that aid in the functions to help in survival. Some examples ofthese adaptations are: Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
1. Obtaining Food Almost all organisms have adaptations to help them obtain food. Examples: Chameleon – long tongue Woodpecker – pointed beak Human – hands and fingers Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
2. Predator-Prey Many organisms have adaptations that serve as a defense against predators. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
One common adaptation that helps predators and prey is called camouflage. An organism that is camouflaged is disguisedso that it is hard to see even when the organism is in view. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
3. Interactions Two species can acquire adaptations because of their interactionwith one another. Interactions take place between organisms that live closetogether. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
4. Hibernation/Estivation • A period of inactivity and decreased body temperature that some animals experience in the winter is hibernaton. • Many desert squirrels and mice experience a similar internal slowdown in the hottest part of the summer which is called estivation. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
5. Migration To migrate is to travelfrom one place to another. Animals migrate to find food, water, orsafenesting grounds. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
Natural selection The process by which individuals that arebetteradapted to their environment surviveandreproducemore successfully than lesswell adapted individuals do. There are fourparts that make up natural selection. They include: Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
1. Overproduction more offspring are bornthan will live to become adults. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
2. Genetic Variation Individuals in a population differfrom one another. Some characteristics improvechances while otherslowerchances for survival. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
3. Struggle to Survive Many individuals diefrom lack of resources. Others are killedby predators or cannot find matesto reproduce. The ones who find resources, survive! Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
4. Successful Reproduction This is the key to natural selection. The strongsurvive, while the weakdie early or have few strongoffspring. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?

Genetic Variation In natural selection, individuals within the population must be different. Over time, the population will be made up of more individuals with characteristicsthat help them survive. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
If a population decreasesrapidly, the characteristics of the individuals are reduced. This is called a geneticbottleneck. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
What is happening in this diagram? What type of organism would make it to this side? Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
Many characteristics may be lost entirelybecause the individuals with those characteristics died. As the population recovers, organisms are genetically similarcausing genetic diseases to occur. Can I list 3 types of adaptations?
