Content Points to be considered • Duration of presentation in minutes /hours • Number of points I will cover • The main points I will speak – list them down • To support the main points use - sub points, analogies, statistics, facts, jokes real life examples, handouts Emphasis: what points do I want to emphasis at the beginning and end Strategies • If the audience is agreeable, result oriented and busy -direct approach --- my views and strongest evidence first • If the audience is hostile or analysis oriented - Indirect approach --- my views and strongest evidence last

Preparing self and Preparing Presentation • Preparing Self: - Preparing my mind to get a positive response from my audience. - Fear of Unknown is natural and normal - Physical reaction of fear –Shivering, Rigidity Stammering, Fidgeting • List down your fears and apprehension • Preparing Presentation • Script • Visuals • Questions • Organize information , have plan A and plan B

Tell myself • I am what I am and where I am , because of what has gone into my mind • I can change what I am and where I am , by changing what goes into my mind. • If I can visualize the invisible , I can achieve the impossible • The more I imagine myself becoming better and better, the more I increase my chances of becoming better • I must practice my opening lines absolutely thoroughly Day by day Every day, in every way I am becoming Better and better

  14. 3rd ‘P’- Practice • Why Practice? To….. - refine narrative and visual material - become familiar with the equipment and the set up - know the narrative better & etch it in memory - provide a psychological boost to confidence

  15. 3rd ‘P’- Practice • Where and how to practice? • Use audio tapes, with script and colored pencils • Mirror • Same or similar site • Same equipments • Same projection set up • Dress rehearsal before hand picked audience • How Much to practice? - Till you become comfortable with equipments, sequence and flow

Why don’t they listen How bad is our listening • We use 1/4th of our listening capability • We use 1/10th of our memory potential • We distort what little we remember Reasons for bad listening • We have a short attention span • We are not taught to listen like 3 R’s • We filter what others say through all kinds of screens • Our thinking speed is 4 times our listening speed • We don’t listen well to those we consider • Inferior • Not very credible • Unattractive

  20. PoiseGeneral confidence and lack of tension Approach- -calmly and unhurriedly -with brief pause for smile and eye contact Dress- • Appropriate for the occasion & audience • Comfortably and in good test • To project an image consistent with the communication objective

  21. Posture • Do Stand - In a relaxed and professional manner - Comfortably upright, weight distributed equally on both the feet - Feet neither two close nor too far apart

  22. Eye Contact & Facial expressions • Eye Contact • Crucial for establishing connection and rapport with the audience • Look at the entire group, rather than at just one side of the room. • Facial Expressions • Maintain- relaxed look • Avoid – dead pan look

  23. Movement • It makes delivery lively • It will relive the visual monotony • It will help in combating tension and stage fright.

  25. How Do I Sound? • Important voice characteristic : Energy, Enthusiasm • Watch out for the tendency of sounding monotonous • Analyze your Vocal Techniques : 4 Important Areas Pitch- Voice inflection, Quality and Volume

  26. Speed Speed is the rate at which one speaks…..

Articulation and Filler Word • Articulation: - How clearly I pronounce my words Avoid….. - mumbling associated with speaking too early - Stringing associated with speaking too fast • Filler Word - Expressions such as ‘er,um,you know, you see, basically’ etc - They indicate search for appropriate words - Eliminate this with proper preparation and practice

Questions Answer questions with questions • Ask the questioner ‘what do you feel?’ • Ask some one from the audience • Ask the entire audience • Agree and disagree If need arises- Admit Ignorance, Pass the buck Things to remember while answering the questions • Switch off the projector • Look at all the people in the audience • If interrupted , ask permission to complete interrupted answer • Be honest, be polite, be brief
