Definition: Social Enterprise A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximize profit for shareholders and owners. (DTI 2002)
Definition: Charity Charities are voluntary organisations which benefit the public in a way that the law says is charitable
It’s confusing! Until 2005 there was not a specific legal structure for social enterprises. Many Social enterprises are registered with the Charity Commission Many Charities will have a trading arm
