Step 1: Read the Story • Riverside Reader, p. 258-281
Warmup • On three separate scraps of paper, write down the name someone who fits each of these descriptions: • Celebrity / Entertainer • Someone in this class • Politician • Fold the scraps of paper in half and place them in the box on my desk.
Wunsche • What is the school's 'social hierarchy'? • Discuss with people at your table. • Together, make a list of several different categories (5-7). • You may focus on student social categories/divisions, or include teachers/administrators in your structure.
Step 2: Identify the Divisions • Mrs. Turbin has a vast and complicated system of Dividing and Classifying people. • List these categories on a piece of paper. • Include one-two sentence descriptions of each category.
Step 3: How does the story help? • Looking at the structure of the story, how has Flannery O’Connor crafted the piece to aide in understanding Mrs. Turbin’s categories? • What do you think her goal was in writing the piece this way?
Step 4: Illustrate the Process • Create a Flowchart (from your Process Analysis days) which illustrates Mrs. Turbin’s decision making process. • Remember, each box on a flowchart represents a question which should have a yes or no answer. The yes or no should ultimately impact where a person is sorted.
Step 5: Illustrate YOUR Process • What steps did you use in dividing and classifying people into the categories you came up with for the warm-up activity? • Create a flowchart which illustrates this process.
Step 6: Show us the Process • You and your group will present your flowcharts to the class in a five minute presentation. • Format: Powerpoint, poster board, be creative! • Your grade will reflect: • Analysis of Turbin’s system • Analysis of Your system • Participation of all group members • And last but not least… we will draw a random character description or name from a box, and you will be tasked with sorting them during your presentation.
