  1. HAZADR Strengthening common reactioncapacity to fightseapollution of oil, toxic and hazardoussubstances in Adriatic Sea Zadar County Zadar County area Kick off meeting Bari, 21-22 January 2013

  2. Partner’sinstitutionalprofile Zadar County is one of the regional authorities in Croatia. It’s an organization responsible for affairs of regional importance on its territory, including enviromental protection and sustainable development. After Croatian Goverment adopted Contingency Plan forAccidentalMarine Pollutionin year 2008 (document which defines the procedures and measures for prediction, prevention, restriction, preparedness for and response to accidental marine pollution and the extraordinary natural events in the sea) Zadar Conuty adopted CountyContingency Plan for AccidentalMarine Pollution. A County Operational Centre, apponited by the County Prefect, is responsible for coordinating activities at sea in accordance with the County Contingency Plan in case of oil pollution amounting less than 2.000 m³ of oil or oily waters. But, for incidents involving more than 2000 m³ oil spilled into the sea, the National Operational Headquarter and National Center for Coordinating Search and Rescue in Rijeka have legal responsibility and duty to coordinate operations at seain accordance with provisions of the National Contingency Plan.

  3. Mainthreats to yourcoasts due to technologicalhazards or needs Most imortant waterway in Zadar County area is Kvarner Gate - Zadar port Gaženica route, where significant traffic of the large cruise ships, ro-ro passenger ships, cargo ships and dry cargo ships for transport ofchemicals and gas is conducted. According to that fact this coastal areahas high probability of collision of ships, grounding and fire on ships, therefore is in danger of large-scalecontamination highly increased in summer time. Also, there is the threat of contamination due to intense marine traffic at Adriatic waterway from ships travelling to the northern Adriatic ports. Picture key: High (red edge), mid-level (blue edge) and low (coastal zone color unlined) level of danger

  4. Expectations from the project • Activities that will affect our project area mostly: • reduction of deployment of response • enhancing clean-up equipment for interventions (purchases of skimmers, ocean booms, oiled water storage capacities, etc.) • trained staff involved in implementing marine pollution contigency plans • increasing awareness of specific target groups including the population living in endangered areas • drafted propositions and guidelines for harmonisation of different level contingency plans

  5. Ourcontribution to HAZADR • Existing documents for implementation: • Vulnerability Assessment for the Conuty Contingency Plan forAccidental Marine Pollution and related maps of vulnerable areas • Risk assessment for the Conuty Contingency Plan forAccidentalMarine Pollution • Maps of vulnerable areas: The Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) already has a significant amount of data within its own proprietary GIS system • Agreement on the Sub-Regional Contingency Plan for prevention of, preparedness for and response to major maritime pollution incidents in the Adriatic Sea
