Students will be studying art and design created in different cultures. ☞ Students will study the elements of design and principles of art. ☞ Students will view examples of artists who use these techniques in their artwork. ☞ Students will learn about art in different cultures that use art elements and principles of design. ☞ Students will grow knowledge and brainstorm original ideas to design their own projects.

  3. Project Summary Students will view various examples of weaving and fiber arts from Africa. This will lead to a class discussion about the meaning and making of traditional Adinkra design symbols. After students view examples, they will consider the possibilities of designing symbols that are personally significant to themselves. This will help students grow knowledge about unfamiliar African art, history, and culture.

  4. Why use projects? ☞ Project based learning is designed as an instructional model for student centered learning. This will engage in their learning process and develop students’ knowledge and skills through problem solving and exploring art. Students will be required to develop their critical thinking and make connections to art by brainstorming and researching. ☞ Students will work in groups and required to complete projects by sharing their ideas and skills. They are encouraged to do higher-level thinking and be involved in the project to grow responsibility. This opportunity will develop critical thinking, problem solving, collaborating, and communicating.

  8. Assessment to Gauge Student Needs We will start the unit with a class discussion about African Art. This will help to see how much prior knowledge our students have about African Art and the culture. We will work on the K-W-H-L Chart as a class activity while we work on the project. This assessment will aid students to research information and participate in class discussion.
