  2. Ancient Egyptian Writing Before exploring the importance of the ancient script, we must first learn what it is. The picture shown to the left is of hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics are the most ancient of the three main Egyptian writings. In Egyptian, “hieroglyphics” means “language of the gods”. The two other types of scripts are hieraticand demotic. Hieroglyphics: the most ancient of the Egyptian writings; a pictographic form of writing Hieratic: a form of hieroglyphics used by priests; abridged form of hieroglyphics Demotic: a writing invented by Egyptian scribes; simplified hieratic writing Egyptian Hieroglyphics

  3. The Importance Writing was very essential to the early Egyptians. Contrary to this, the only people who read or wrote were scribes and priests. Egyptians had a strong belief that it was vital to write down and communicate information, especially that of religion and government. Scribes: someone who writes things down; one of the only groups of people in ancient Egypt who read or wrote

  4. Early Egyptians recorded things on their temples. They recorded things on the walls of tombs. And, they recorded things on papyrus. And when I say “they”, I mean “scribes”. Scribes had to go to scribe school to learn writing and reading. Scribes started writing with very basic hieroglyphics and worked up to more complicated glyphs. They wrote things down for others and documented censuses, food supply, tax records, court cases, soldiers killed in battle, etc. They wrote all of these things down with tools called reeds. This method of writing was beautiful but took a long, long time to do. So, scribes invented a new form of writing called demotic script. Papyrus: a form of paper used by scribes in ancient Egypt; an ancient form of paper “Students [at scribe school] typically spent 12 or more years learning hieroglyphics ”-History Alive! The Ancient World, page 98
