1. Task 7: Simile Search • All of the following are similes. Write one sentence for each that indicates whether it appears in The Outsiders or not: • Like a bump on a log • Like two pieces of pale blue-green ice • Like a stuck pig • Like a leaf • Like honey draws flies • Like a lynx • Like some Greek god come to earth • White as a sheet

3. Playing with Words Believe it or not, you use metaphors and similes every day of your life! Some words are metaphors all by themselves. She was a bright student. We all know that “bright” refers to light. But in this sentence we are comparing intelligence to light. It’s a metaphor!

4. More metaphors…. • The crowd was an angry beast. • She was the sunshine. • He was a tornado of activity • Silence is golden • My memory is foggy.

5. Simile • While a metaphor directly states that “something” is “something else”, a simile compares things using “as” or “like” He was as quick as a rabbit!

6. Quick as a Wink • Lots of cliches are similes. They are fun to use, but don’t overuse them in your writing! • Even if you are busy as a beaver, it’s not as cute as a button or as American as apple pie to overuse cliches. It should be as plain as the nose on your face!

7. Haiku Poems

8. Haiku poems are Japanese and contain only 3 lines. • The poems are used to paint a picture in the readers mind. • Each line has a certain number of syllables.

9. The first line of every haiku has 5 syllables • The second contains 7 syllables. • The final line contains 5 syllables. • This forms a 5,7,5 pattern. • Haikus are usually about nature.

13. Creating a Haiku • You will create haikus for at least three characters from The Outsiders. • Each haiku must contain at least one metaphor or simile. • You can compare the characters to a living thing, an object, food, etc. • In each haiku, use one word from the text that is used to describe the character, and underline it in your haiku. • Your haiku should indicate what makes the character an outsider.
