  5. Why Do We Sin?

  6. The Enemy Within

  7. Romans 7:21- 23 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God's law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind…

  8. “My sin is full of life!”

  9. Romans 7:18-19 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing.

  10. Galatians 5:16-26 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.

  11. 17 They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

  12. 19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunken-ness…and the like.

  13. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithful-ness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

  14. We put a higher priority on personal success than we do on personal growth

  15. For every ten men that can handle failure, only one in ten can handle success. Abraham Lincoln

  16. What is the Price Tag?

  17. 2 Samuel 11:27 But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the LORD.

  18. “You are the man!”

  19. How Does David Respond To His Sin?

  20. 1. He Cries For Mercy

  21. Psalm 51:1 Have mercy on me, O God…

  22. Mercy is the act of sparing someone the consequences of their sins.

  23. Psalm 6:1-2 O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. 2 Be merciful to me, LORD…

  24. 1. He Cries For Mercy Psalm 51:1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compas-sion…

  25. Psalm 103:13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him…

  26. 2. He prays for cleansing

  27. Psalm 51 Verse 1 – “according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.” Verse 2 - “Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin."

  28. Verse 7 - "Cleanse me with hys-sop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow." Verse 9 - “Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.”

  29. Psalm 130:1-4 If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgive-ness…

  30. Psalm 32:1-2 Blessed is he whose trans-gressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2 Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him…

  31. 1 John 1:8-10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

  32. 3. He confesses the depth of his sin

  33. Psalm 51:3-5 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

  34. 4Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

  35. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

  36. 4. He pleads for renewal

  37. Psalm 51:8,10-17 Personal Renewal 8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

  38. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

  39. A Renewed Heart For Righteousness 13 Then I will teach trans-gressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.

  40. A Renewed Worship 14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteous- ness.

  41. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

  42. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

  43. In Christ…

  44. God will spare the sinner because he did not spare his Son Charles Spurgeon
