Common Noun • Names a person, place, thing or idea • EXAMPLES: • Person: boy, girl • Place: school, house • Thing: book, window • Idea: happiness, love
Proper Nouns • Name a particular person, place, thing, or idea (HINT: look for capital letters!) • EXAMPLES: • Person: Jason Pavis, Mrs. Wilson • Place: NHMS, The White House • Thing: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
Nouns cont’d • Tip: In a sentence, nouns usually follow the words: a, an, the
You Try: • Each of you name a common noun and a proper noun.
Compound Nouns • Noun made of two or more words put together • EXAMPLES: • Mrs. Kehoe • cheerleader • homework • light-year • self-esteem
Collective Nouns • Names a group • EXAMPLES: • Team, committee, board, crew, class
Concrete Noun • Names common or proper noun that you can see, taste, touch, smell, or hear • EXAMPLES: • Window, The Giver, NHMS, boy
Abstract Nouns • Names common nouns that are ideas, feelings, or qualities of a person (you can’t see, taste, touch, smell, or hear them!) • EXAMPLES: • Anger, beauty, wisdom, honor, Christianity
Pronouns • Pronouns- used in place of a noun • Example: • Ask Brandon if Brandon has done Brandon’s homework. • Now add pronouns: • Ask Brandon if hehas done hishomework.

Pronouns cont’d • Sometimes the antecedent is NOTstated. • Example: • Who asked that question? • Someone will have to clean up this mess.

Adjectives • Adjective- describes a noun or pronoun • Usually comes before the noun or pronoun it is describing • Examples: I love your purple sweater and hoop earrings. • Adjective- purple • Noun- sweater • Adjective- hoop • Noun- earrings
Adjectives cont’d • Adjectives can be common (lower case) or proper (capitalized) • Examples: • The Italian flag is red, green, and white. • Adjectives- Italian, red, green, white • Noun- flag • I like to eat Mexican food every now and again. • Adjective- Mexican • Noun- food
