Forest Entomology The study of Forest insects that feed on forest trees Most insects are not harmful to trees Forests changed drastically in the 1800s
Destroyed Timber • Other causes are weather, grazing animals, and air pollutants
4 Types of Forest Insects • Borers • Tunnel in and feed on twigs, ranches, trunks, roots and logs • Leaf-Feeders • Eat Leaves • Plant-Sucking • Feed on sap of trees • Gall • Cause abnormal tissue growths on trees • Plant Benign Cancer
Conk • Fruiting Body at the base of a tree • Grows out
Metamorphosis • The stages an organism develops after birth/hatching • Insects are typically: • Egg Larvae Pupae Adult
Parthogenesis • Asexual Reproduction • No male is necessary to reproduce for at least part of the growing season • Common in Aphids
Mites • Tiny Spiders • 8 legs • Usually at the rear of the insect • Typically plant-sucking or gall
Molt • Shedding outer layer of skin • Part of an organisms life cycle • Common in cicadas
Pheromone • Secreted or Excreted chemical hormone that triggers a social response to attract the same species
Canker • Localized dead areas • Grows inside • Typically caused by a Fungus • Most are lethal although it may take years to kill the entire tree
Forest Pathology The study of forest tree diseases for the purpose of preventing and controlling them Can be result of unfavorable weather factor (drought, flood, etc.) 4 types of diseases: Fungi, Bacteria, Virus, Parasitic Plants
Fungi • Type of disease • Can attack all parts of a tree • Can cause cankers • Reproduce through spores • Lots of good types of fungi
Spores • Single or small group of united cells • Produced by fruiting bodies (ex. mushrooms) • Used to Identify a plant disease • Like dark and moist locations
Bacteria • Single Cell • Can be good • Typically stay on the surface of a tree and find a wound and enter • Can produce cankers or galls
Virus • Not a plant or an animal • Cannot be seen • Cannot live outside the host • Do not feed on plant tissue • Slowly kills a tree, makes a tree loose it’s vigor
Parasitic Plants • Flowering plants • Produce seeds normally • Have no chlorophyll • Sometimes don’t have roots • Takes host trees resources
