  1. Disposal Option When is reasonable and where is feasible? Irena Mele ARAO, Slovenia Euradwaste ‘04, Luxembourg, 29 March – 1 April 2004

  2. WM from perspective of small nuclear programme • The needs and capabilities of small nuclear programmes specific: • In Slovenia 1 NPP (jointly owned by Croatia) • 1 research reactor • No plans for new NPP, decision to phase out nuclear energy • Operation of NPP until 2023 • Waste stored on the premises of NPP • Decommissioning fund established

  3. What disposal is reasonable? • Operational waste quantities small - disposal of operational and decommissioning waste together: • LILW repository for short-lived waste • Direct disposal of SF+ long-lived LILW or multinational option • Long-term WM programme: • Different scenarios for decommissioning, LILW disposal and SF disposal analysed from technical and financial aspects

  4. Is disposal feasible? • Scenarios with fast decommissioning and early disposal put unacceptable financial burden on NPP • Feasible scenario: • Decommissioning in 30 years • LILW repository in 2013 • SF repository in 2050 at earliest • Optimized scenario: • Decommissioning in 45 years • LILW repository in 2018 • SF repository in 2065
