  2. VSEPR Theory • Stands for valence-shell electron-pair repulsion theory • States that because electrons repel each other, the molecular shape of the compound will change so that the valence electron pairs are as far away from each other as possible

  3. VSEPR Theory • Rules for determining the molecular shape/the geometry of the compound • Draw an electron dot structure to show all valence electrons • Count the number of “electron clouds” surrounding the central atom • Electron clouds are regions, or areas between bonded atoms in which you would find electrons • Double and triple bond still represent one electron cloud because they are in the same region • Predict the geometry of the electron clouds around the central atom • Ignore any lone pairs (even those around the central atom) and predict the geometry of the molecule/ion
