  9. Moral of the Story A background of L2 learning with inaccurate or no feedback can lead to an inaccurate self-perception.

  10. Diagnostic Analysis • Celce-Murcia (1996) • Profile Questionnaire • Diagnostic Passage • Avery and Ehrlich (1992) • Consonant and Vowel lists • Problems of Selected Language Groups • Poem by Robert Frost

  11. Salient Pronunciation Patterns • /ɫ/ vs. /w/ • /iy/ vs. /ɛ/ -(teacher error) • Linking in connected speech

  12. Lesson Plan Reflection and Evaluation What worked: • Description of sounds • Discrimination activities • Personalized word list What did not work: • Writing a story from word list • Story retelling did not go as planned – but Jie amazed me! • Did not play back recordings for Jie • Communicative autonomy practice did not include follow-up

  13. Implementation • Four one-hour sessions • Location varied within PatteeLibrary- proved to be a bad idea due to the crowds. • Spent over half of the time on /ɫ/ vs. /w/-too much?

  14. Assessments • Spiral learning method • Revisiting of material until mastery • Does not require formal testing • Final Assessment • Repeat of diagnostic test for comparison • Only one new excerpt from biology article • No spontaneous speech samples

  15. What did the tutee learn? • Jie gained an awareness of her pronunciation patterns. • Jie improved her dark /ɫ/ pronunciation.

  16. What did the tutor learn? • Don’t tutor at the library. • Do more communicative activities. • Use recordings for tutee’s benefit. • Consider personality when developing activities. • Spend more time on linking sounds. • Assessments need to be more measurable. • Bringing in third person might have been helpful for conversation.

  17. Conclusion Jie doesn’t /sɛw/ biology anymore, but she is still amazing.

  18. The End
