  6. 2.1.12—TAKE OUT HW Drill: • Get a packet from the PICK UP bin—do NOT WRITE ON THIS PACKET! • Get a W.S. from the TURN IN bin—use this worksheet to record your answers. • You can work collaboratively with your group on each step of this activity to learn about Mark Twain, the controversy of his his writing, and his novel Huck Finn. • DO NOW: read the biography and answer 1-3 (questions will be on the next slide) on the worksheet.

  7. Biography: • Read the short biography. • Answer the following questions on the W.S. • Where did Twain grow up? • When he was a young man, what was Twain’s occupation? • Why is Huck Finn considered his masterpiece?

Mark Twain • Real name: Samuel Leghorne Clemens • Clemens' pseudonym, Mark Twain, comes from his days as a river pilot. • It is a river term which means two fathoms (one fathom=1.8 meters) or 12-feet when the depth of water for a boat is being sounded. • "Mark Twain" means that it is safe to navigate. • The term would be yelled when it was safe to start steering your riverboat down the Mississippi.

Terms to know: • A vernacular is the native language or native dialect of a specific population, as opposed to a language of wider communication that is not native to the population, such as a national language. • The term dialect is most often applied to regional speech patterns, but a dialect may also be defined by other factors, such as social class.

  11. In literature, regionalism or local color refers to fiction or poetry that focuses on specific features – including characters, dialects, customs, history, and topography – of a particular region.

Satire is primarily a literary genre or form where vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement. • Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon
