Townsend Acts 1760’s • The British Government taxes things the colonists buy. • This includes sugar, molasses, tea, coffee, paint, lead, glass, and paper.
The Boston Massacre (March 5,1770) What does Massacre mean? • Americans swear, jeer, and throw snowballs and rocks at the British Soldiers. • British soldiers fire on the Americans.
Tea Act (1773) • After the massacre, most taxes are lifted except the tax on tea. • Monopoly on British tea imports. • Many members of EnglishParliament held shares. • Tea Act permitted the Company to sell tea directly to colonies.
The Intolerable Acts (1774) 1.Close the port of Boston to repay the tea lost. 2.All colonial government appointed by the king. 3.Soldiers can be placed in private homes Lord North: Prime Minister of England
Intolerable Acts continued. • 4. Colonists can be taken to England for trial. (no more trial by peers) • 5. Gives Western parts of colonies to Canadian Province
