Overview: BES • The BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) is the Package that is part of the Blackberry wireless from Research In Motion ( RIM). • The Software and service connects to messaging and collaboration software (MS Exchange, Lotus Domino, etc) on enterprise networks and redirects emails and synchronize contact and calendaring information between servers and mobile devices.
Overview: BES • Blackberry provides complete secure end to end link between the corporate email system and the handheld. • When a email arrives at the corporate inbox, a copy will immediately pushed to handheld. • BES using Triple Data Encryption Standard ( TDES) to encrypt emails.

Device Activation To Start the enterprise activation process, Browse to Options Advanced Option Enterprise Activation on your BB device.
Device Activation The Blackberry device sends activation data to the Wireless service provider, which passes the data to the Blackberry Infrastructure.
Device Activation The Blackberry Infrastructure identifies the data as an activation request, and packages it to an ETP.DAT file. this file is then attached to an email messages and sent to the email address which you typed on the activation. screen
Device Activation The Blackberry enterprise server notes that new message has arrived in your mailbox. The blackberry enterprise server is designed to recognize this email message is an activation message and to remove it from your mailbox.
Device Activation Using the data from the activation message , the Blackberry enterprise server contact your blackberry device to acknowledge that activation request has been received.
Device Activation Blackberry enterprise server verifies the activation Password and initialize the activation process. Finally device will get activated

Mail Flow from Messaging Server to BB Device • New Message arrives, Exchange MTA delivers message to user’s desktop email mailbox. • Blackberry maintains a MAPI connection to the user’s mailbox, then blackberry processes message as it arrives. • BES randomly generates a reference id and tag. • Message is compressed and encrypted. • BES sends the message through port 3101 to the wireless network, which verifies the PIN belongs to a valid handheld registered on the network. • The network locates the handheld and delivers the message. • The handheld decrypts and decompresses the message and notifies the user of new mail
Mail Flow from the BB Device • Message sent from handheld, on the handheld the message is assigned a reference id. • BB Device encrypts the message and sends the message to the wireless network over port 3101. • Message is decrypted and decompressed: BES decrypts and decompresses the message. • Message is placed on the Exchange Store. • Message delivery: The Exchange MTA delivers the message. • A copy of the message is placed in the user’s desktop email program sent items folder
